Software OC'ing?

Hi guys,
I have a Dell 0WG864 motherboard with a 965 chipset, which came stock in my Dimension E520. Keeping the E6300 it came with, I've upgraded the power supply, hard drive, memory, and graphics card, and now I'm interested in playing around with minor overclocks. Dell's BIOS is really simplistic, though, and I don't think I'll be able to do anything with that. (My version is 2.2.1 -- where do I go to find a more up-to-date BIOS?)

I've seen software clocking programs, and I'd like to see what y'all have to say about them. Thanks!

I don't think you can o/c the Dells. I purchased an E520 for my dad and that bios is locked down. You would probably need to replace the mobo to o/c.

Okay I found another thread here explaining clockgen, and how to make the clockgen changes permanent-esque. I'll check it out.

Is there anything I should be wary of? This is my first time ever changing crucial settings like this.

Edit: I've downloaded CoreTemp, speedfan, CPU-Z, HWMonitor, and PCWizard. I'll get clockgen here in a minute. I just dl'ed 3DMark06, for testing. Is this all overkill? What is really necessary here? What programs do you like to use together?

Edit2: Just got clockgen... how do I use this thing? The CUPID clockgen page is down, so I can't go there for help.

Speedfan is a very good overclocking software.

Yes, I found speedfan but I haven't really played with it much, yet. It tells me that my temps are up to 76C. Isn't that a bit high?

I'll be looking for a walkthrough guide... if anybody has some tips, I'm all ears.

Is that your CPU temps? And is that at load? Use Core Temp and RealTemp to verify that's the right temp.

Ahh, sorry. CPU temps are stable at 39C, with no load. The two temps labeled GPU and Core are both at 75C (but who knows if that's actually where the heat is, according to the SpeedFan readme material).

Also, I can't see my fan speed on that main page anymore. I used'ta could...
