Softmod to convert FireGL to Radeon?

I've got a laptop that has a FireGL T2 128mb card. It's the equivalent of a 128mb Radeon 9600.

Unfortunately, with the Omegas (and the regular drivers), the FireGL doesn't play nice in openGL games. Quake 3 and Doom3 don't want to work, but I -want- them to work.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to do a softmod or whatever to make the laptop think it has a Radeon 9600 in it so I can play the games I want to?

Hmmm... you may want to look into a bios flash. I am not sure if you can flash onboard video... do some research on it and you may find something helpfull though

how much would a softmod really increase gaming performance? i know that a converted 9800pro to firegl you lose about 2-300 3dmarks01 points but gains as much as 60% in specview.

I'm not concerned with increasing game performance so much as I'm interested in making OpenGL games work properly. The workstation OpenGL drivers fuck around with games I need to be able to play.

I bought the laptop because it's a high-quality machine(and there wasn't a 9600 model that had what I wanted at the time I ordered it. All they had at the time were 9000s or mobility fireGL T2s.); I don't need it for rendering or specview or anything that it's actually geared for.

You may need to force the drivers from the device manager and make it load 9600 drivers even though it think it's a FireGL.

BUT: I have had no problems with FireGL cards in IBM laptops playing OpenGL games.

actually I forgot to try that; and did that.

I was just going to post the success here when I read this...

I guess this means I can finally use this laptop for some good gaming.

Performance wasn't as good as I'd hoped for; and the LCD ghosts (damn you flexview, you're great at so many other things, why not refresh rate too?)...but it's workable.
