Socket AM3+ is DEAD

The problem with the Bulldozer launch was that the product was hyped up by the terrible marketing team at AMD (at the time) as well as by baseless speculation from AMD fanboys and tech enthusiasts in general. It didn't help that people went and took some of the hype back from when Bulldozer was originally supposed to launch (like back in 07 or 08) and tried to apply it to the then-current date.

I would go so far as to say that 95% of the problem was the bullshit that JF-AMD ("John" aka Marketing VP) was spewing out of his mouth every chance he could..The tech sites that were desperate for page hits took the bait hook line and sinker and ran with it.

After the whole thing played out, I sat back and asked myself if the guy knew he was going to be let go and had a two pronged strategy to keep his job or leave without a black cloud over his head. First he decided to pull out a Hail Mary of marketing in hopes that BD was well received and he could point to it and scream "Look, see what I did!" on every single forum/tech site...

Or he figured if the first option failed, he would have successfully poisoned AMD's well by trolling the entire tech focused internet with outrageous performance claims..I'd go so far as to say that his "apology" was just the last strike in the largest, most successful troll fest the internet has ever seen!:eek::eek::eek:
 
I wasn't around when he was posting, but people have told me various things. I don't know what to believe. Some people claim (like yourself) that most of the blame lay at his shoulders, while others have insisted that he was mainly telling people the things he himself was told.

Regardless, he was one of the people who were fired during the firing sprees, and he went to some other company.
 
As for the PCI-e lanes, I don't know how many FM2+ supports, but I get a sarcastic rhetorical vibe from your comment, so I assume FM2+ doesn't support that many. People who use a single-GPU or even xfire with two cards should be fine on FM2+, regardless.

I'm guessing it can't though, not enough pins. Maybe AMD will do what Intel is doing with socket 2011 and just provide enthusiast versions of their server chips/boards. I can't imagine them completely ignoring that market altogether.

Higher end boards could utilize the PLX chip for lane splitting as well, just like the 1155/1150 intel sockets

Personally I think my FX-8120 I bought at launch is one of my best purchases after they figured out the Steam bug that denied us being able to play SteamWorks games for many months. It's the only piece of tech that has gotten significantly faster over time as more software comes out that is multithreaded.

I do want an upgrade, but there's nothing less than $500 (ridiculous) that's a tangible upgrade. 3770K is a sidegrade at best. FX-8350 / 4770K are slightly faster than what I have, so not really worth it unless i want to keep up with the Joneses. 6 core Intels are an legit upgrade as I render video while I stream, but I'll never spend $500 on them. I'd rather buy a second monitor for $500.

The upgrade cycle lately has become less and less exciting with Intel releasing nothing new and AMD playing with the XBOX and PS4.

Yeah, I seriously regret not having picked up an FX 8150 at launch. :( :mad: I listened to others online and bought a 1090T which I saw no difference with from the P2 945 that I switched from. Now, I am on an 8350 and 8320 and loving them both.
 
I saw a huge difference in render times and multitasking performance going from a PhII 955 @4.2 GHz to a PhII 1100t @ 4.0 GHz. I can keep UDK running in the background (uses 2 cores fully just sitting there) and do scwork in Zbrush (can use as many cores as you have) while waiting for normal maps to bake in Maya (uses only one core for preview renders). Or I can load up a game while UDK is running, basically multitasking in general.

and that is a modest comparison.

at the moment they are competitive in the £140 market (8350), whereas the cheapest 7970/770 is about £270, and i reckon an average gaming PC only needs a 1:2 cpu:gpu ratio to provide balanced performance, maybe 1:3 for an eyefinity rig.

I have such an amount of mixed feelings about the article. The FMx platform is for people who don't give a shit about IPC and moar power. Why suddenly would they care about Huma HSA en instructions per cycle ?

Suddenly Fusion is the magic word for AMD management how can they be so blind as to see that by telling people it is okay we are not supporting any of our performance chips because the market prolly does not get to see the true value of it (due to software problems there is nothing wrong with the 8 core Bulldozer).

I can see where they are going with this in general but AMD is forgetting that to be able to use the APU as they have designed it (cpu + offload large calculations to GPU). Stil is somewhat on the horizon they can see it happening but like the Bulldozer sadly so little to no software is mainstream which means that it is not going to happen.

Selling FM2+ as an enthusiast platform is a mistake, a big one even.

Actually, Piledriver/Richland have mostly the same IPC as their FX equivalent Vishera, moreso comparing the A8/A10 to an FX-4300, the performance is the same mostly clock-for-clock, at least in the tests I've seen.

And gamers don't really need more than four cores anyway. For people who do specialized workloads that require/can utilize more threads, then those people will buy their parts accordingly.

As it stands, we don't know anything about the future processors for FM2+ besides Kaveri, Carrizo, and the inevitable iGPU-less Athlon versions that will exist at some point. FM2+ can be "enthusiast", though "enthusiasts" come in many different flavors... Enthusiast doesn't necessarily mean 100% top-of-the-line, get over 9,000 fps on Crysis 3 rig or anything. There are enthusiasts who try to buy the cheapest stuff they can get (deliberately many times) just to see how far they can take it, for example.
 
As said before by many here, AMD probably wants to unify the AMX and the FMX socket into one, not necessarily get rid of AMX on favour of FMX. What if the next socket 'XM1' has support for both 140w CPUs as well as integrated video, 32 PCI-E lanes...

Back then i had X6 1055T and 890GX so i was reading everything JF posted thinking that I'll drop nice 8 core bulldozer into my mobo for a nice upgrade.

Even when benchmarks from Bulldozer ES surfaced he was telling us they are fake and we will be suprised when real one is released :D

Oh and I remember how after bulldozer launch some people preached how Windows 7 is ineeficient at administration of threads to module architecture and how Win 8 will be huge improvent.

So glad i dumped that X6 on ebay after first ES benchmarks and got 2500K instead which still runs circles around anything AMD released since then.

yeh its funny seeing as how NO 2014 news is really up yet for anything but kaveri as it is during 2013 that is changing leading to 2014, and for server side as well for the same reason, Vishera was not due to "update" till 2014 anyways, so they are pulling this info from their bottom me thinks, as AMD has not outlined an updated roadmap in the last little while.

the PLX chip also adds latency and for something "slower" then others offerings that would not help 1 bit. not to mention what is the point of going with APU when you still can go with a better offering to use the multi-gpu goodness anyways(even an iGP less APU) seems very wasteful to want to use an APU with high end gpu let alone multi of them :p

As far as more advanced FM2 then am3+ umm no(seeing as one is very much based on the other) unified more yes, more advanced not really, pci-e 3.0 to this day is next to useless as nothing save SSD are generally even coming close to needing this speed(and they will be going with the next sata interface anyways from sounds of it) extra pci-e lanes on the chip set yes, but again very few people need as many lanes as they now have with 30+

As far as not using HT with AMD cpu, umm I think not, they might be baking the HT(hypertransport) and NB/SB into the die more, but this is not something they will get rid of entirely, don't forget that Intel uses something very similar to this(QPI/DMI) there is a reason why. It used to be FSB, AMD replaced it with an integrated memory controller and HT to feed the whole subsystem that much faster, then they moved the northbridge onto the chip, far as I recall they are or have moved southbridge onto the chip as well.

HT is an important link to core to core communications and your idea of "no longer needed" is right up there, both AMD and Intel with hypertransport and Quickpath for core to core communications and their memory controllers respectively would not function the way we use them currently if they did not have them the way they do. Maybe the "name" might go away, but the functions will not, it is part of their designs.

but yeh what would the point of having a 1090t then underclock/undervolt it be lol, undervolt yes as most if not all cpu out there with a decent board can be undervolted which helps with temps for sure.

I don't know, but I 100% agree with many here, AMD should step out and say their plans, if they say "we will not be making SR for FX and AM3+" it might piss people off, but better that then letting it sit to the last minute and losing out big time, the waiting game is good for no one, especially as these big players know what they are doing usually years ahead of time, not months.

Either way last "official" thing from AMD I heard on this was quite simple. AM3+ will support Phenom II, Bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller derived desktop processors, Excavator at this point is unknown and will likely be a socket change to update the features of the base chipset as well as the user functionality(being full out pci-e 3.0 next usb, next sata, ddr4 or some such new memory type)
 
and yes, that is what they want to do, have a unified socket at some point, easier on the users and on themselves, socket FM was probably a "tester" to see what they could shrink and adjust and see what the users wanted to gauge what was needed, AM was meant to be balls to the wall approach, with the gpu getting as powerful as they are as fast as they are, if they can get an apu type chip that can disable or enable the gpu as needed so when you play a high 3d game you can use discrete(if you have 1) or when low 3d and desktop iGPU is used instead, they need to get that sorted out before this comes a true alternative.

There is a reason why some of us use the chips we have the way we use them, some of us like me got a board that can easily use the FX chips I decided to stick with a Ph II x4 instead as it is not being as wasteful. Depending on the game, the task or whatever sure that 2500k is fast but the term "run circles around" is just LOL in so many ways. If the game or app in question was able to run full speed at more then ample performance who gives 2 shits if it has more on top of, fan boys always make it sound like it was like going from a sail to lightning when such is not the case at all at least 80% of the time.

I just bought a 4k screen not too long ago and I can imagine going multi-GPU. I understand that PCI-E 8x doesn't really have any impact on GPU performance with current cards (even in multi-GPU configurations), but I also have a PCI-E 8x RAID controller, a sound card, and a TV tuner. AM3+ currently provides a nice low-cost alternative to socket 2011.

Then again I suppose the AMD CPU would become the bottleneck in 4k res/multi-GPU configurations.
 
I looked up AMD and FS1B and came up empty. Link to new socket name from AMD please?

Socket FS1B? If anything, that would simply be the second version of the FS1 socket, since that socket was used for mobile products, mostly notebooks. Llano, Trinity and Richland were on it. Socket FM2+ is labeled as "FM2b" on motherboards. Never heard anything about "FS1B" being the future unified socket... That wouldn't make any sense.

Seeing as how Carrizo will also drop in to FM2+, and AMD long ago canceled the 1090FX platform, seems to me that FM2+ will be the unified socket. We probably won't see anymore sockets until DDR4 comes, which would probably still allow you to drop in Carrizo or something (which most likely would have a dual-IMC for DDR3 and DDR4.)
 
All you need to do is undervolt and underclock and that will fix your temps. Or you know, don't buy a hex core cpu.

Thanks, i already downvolt the 1090t to 1.23v, but right now, with 29C ambient, temps inside the case are 37C and CPU temp is 55C while video encoding. I have 3 intake slow fans (1000-1200 rpm), 1 exhaust (1000 rpm). Unfortunately the GPU is passive and radiates heat right under the CPU. There are also 2 HDDs and 1 SSD that warm up the front intake air as it passes through.

So, although it would be a slight downgrade, i am seriously thinking getting an FX-6300, which is 95W and undervolted will drop even lower. I was waiting for Steamroller with the hope of a better 95W CPU, but in all fora i visit, it seems that people pretty much give the AM3+ as dead-end socket...

The 1090T is nice CPU, but taught me to avoid 125W CPUs like the plague. Too hot in the summer. The FX-83xx should be even worse, as tests show it's a 140W CPU really. My 1090T is a particularly unfortunate case, since the IHS is visibly uneven on its surface, with a nice bump near the middle and a slight curve near edges. And i don't have the patience or past experience to lap it.

Well Michaelius is doing what he does best :) he just talks smack and runs benchmarks all day long preferably old benchmarks that are unoptimized for a newer architecture because that is the best thing ever.

Yep but the reality of thing is that they "never" said anything beside Excavator not coming to AM3+ so it is weighing words from some of the PR people which is another sad excuse for not telling people what is going on with AM3+

Yeah, to hell with it. I just ordered an FX-6300. In winter i may even be able to overclock it to 4Ghz, since it's 95W originally and i 've read it's really easy to arrive there at stock voltage...
Also ordered a Cooler Master K280 case, i hope it's cooler, given it has front mesh.

Sorry AMD, tired of looking into the crystal ball for the fate of AM3 and Steamroller. This will be my last "upgrade" (or sidegrade) for a good time.

Would've been sweet if they could've gotten Steamroller out sooner (and if they would've confirmed it wasn't exclusive to FM2+).

edit: I remember that article. Though there's no official statement from AMD about that, everything else was true about Vishera, so... It's plausible I guess. True on the 2nd bit as well, I remember seeing quotes from AMD where they said specifically three generations of CPU for AM3+. The Centurions don't count as a new generation since they were just factory OC'ed 8350's.

The firm said Trinity's use of FM2 will be the last socket change before it standardises on one socket for all of its desktop processors.

Could this be FM2+? And no AM4 for sure. Actually, it could be FM3 with DDR4 support. FM3 might be really similar to FM2+, with a few slight changes, like how AM3 was similar to AM2+.

Well, it was a half-hearted decision, since all i care about is x264 video encoding and the 1090T is marginally better than the FX-6300 there, but, i returned from vacation and decided to close the top exhaust of the PC and right now, the 1090T has hit 60C @ 1.23v (and stock speed). It's ridiculous. I even cleaned everything, removed the mobo and reinstalled, re-seated 4 times 2 difference coolers with 2 different TIMs and there's nothing to do. Seems the GPU and HDDs are increasing the heat on the 1090T area. I also substituded the paste of the GPU and of the mobo's chipset with Arctic Ceramique 2, but didn't seem to help either.

So i bit the bullet... IF Steamroller does get out in AM3+ i will be eating my hat though... To be honest, the FX-6300 should be plenty for my needs. But, you know how it is... You get greedy. So if Steamroller is AM3+ and a 95W 8-core comes out, i may not be able to resist. I hope i do though, cause i 've too many AM3 compatible CPUs now (Athlon x2 240, Athlon 605e, Athlon 640, Phenom 1090T).

At any rate, i hope with the new case that has front mesh and an undervolted FX-6300 during warm months, that the situation will improve. I HATE hot CPUs. You can't imagine the difference in heat output between the 1090T and the 605e (which i undervolt and ends up lower than 45W) or the 240 (which it undervolts to a 45W more or less). On the bright side, if the FX-6300 overclocks so easily as they say up to 4Ghz, in winter i could bring it there and have a small edge over the 1090T, while staying within 125W probably. So, in a way, it is more flexible CPU.

It would suffice to come out and say their plans to their customers or at least, negate the press with rumours about going all FM2+. But seems there are many geniouses like JF-AMD in the PR department...

That 6300 set you back hardly anything as far as a CPU goes, I personally believe there will be at least one more fx chip for the am3+ platform. Best case you sell the 6300 down the road and get a new fx chip, worst case the chip was so cheap that if the next fx chip is on a different platform still sell the thing and get the new one :)

I only get coolers that use the stock AMD bracket. I am getting too old to mess up with backplates etc. :D In the past days i swapped coolers very often. Because it took 2 seconds to mount and unmount...

Anyway, i have availability of Xigmatek Balder and Scythe Rasetsu. I think they 're on par with the CM Evo. I also have 1 Scythe Katana 3 lying around, but it's weaker performer. The problem here is high ambient temperature. Also, i 'd prefer keeping Cool N Quiet on, this is why i normally don't overclock.

Yeah, makes sense. I usually don't sell my CPUs, i give away the older ones to close friends when they have need for them. I also keep 2 more rigs for me in house and usually when the "primary's" rig CPU is upgraded, the CPU goes to no.2 rig and the one from no.2 goes to no.3, while the CPU of no.3 waits its turn to be given to a close friend or relative. But i prefer the Athlons over the 1090T, they run much cooler and are plenty powerful for what i need them. So the 1090T will be the next in line to be given away. I will try to push myself into selling it, but i am bored/lazy of such things.

And given the excuse of the FX-6300 purchase and a new case with USB3, i also ordered an Asrock 970 extreme3 R2.0, which has USB3 header... In total i will have 5 Asrock 970 extreme3s. :p

So, i really shouldn't upgrade often, because i make some irrational extra purchases and i don't make logical plans like the ones you describe "upgrade-sell old-upgrade-sell". :p Or, as you say, i should start selling components.

As for moving to new socket, there is no way for me...At least for some years. I 've invested too much on AM3/AM3+ to achieve homogeneous and interchangeable components. And if it wasn't for video encoding, i really would be just fine with an Athlon x2.

I now have:
- 4 AM3 cpus, 1 AM3+.
- 3 AM2+ mobos (2x790G,1x780G), 5 AM3+ mobos (970).
- 8x2GB DDR2 800Mhz, 8x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz.
- 2xHD 6570, 3xHD5450.
- Complete peace of mind, that if ANYTHING fails, i can substitute it immediately with unused spare part.

P.S.: Yes, my brother and my best friend, both with very low hardware requirements, never bother to upgrade their computers. They just know that when i move to next socket, there will be spare components for at least 2 builds for them. My upgrade strategy is awful really, but i try to comfort myself thinking that i buy cheap components. Many, but cheap. :D
 
So i didnt read it all, but is right now a bad time to consider buying an AMD rig?

i just sold my high end i7 3770k / 7950 / 16G / 2 x 240G Corsair SSD rig for a nice turn around and thought.. why not try cheap and go AMD..
 
I'm in the boat of: if AMD releases a steamroller FX 8550, I'll upgrade my Mobo and grab one. If they don't, I'll switch to intel (probably 2011 or 2011-2). Baking lighting in UDK takes too long on my 1100t @4.0 GHz, and it definitely is not up-to-snuff for games nowadays... I can tolerate it for now, but I am looking for an upgrade window sometime mid 2014. I want to remain faithful to AMD for the sake of keeping their competition with intel alive, but they just don't have ANY 'prosumer' products anymore, so Intel workstation products are the ONLY way to go...

Cool and Quiet works fine while overclocking...

On AM3+ chips you only need to disable APM Master Mode. With it on the CPU will throttle to maintain its rated TDP.
 
for me i do like my VM's i test for work so why i was considering AMD really now.. i tend to go back and forth just to play, but i would hate to invest in an AMD rig AM3+ rig now to know i have 0 chance to say uprade the CPU, however, i usually sell entire rigs when i buy new as i have done in the past, from a AMD 1050 sold, to an i5 2500k sold to my recent i3770k rig sold..

So with that should i be looking to AM3+ ? i could maybe wait at most 1 month before i really need a new rig at home..
 
well considering the new announcements from AMD regarding Mantle and such, even if right now AMD cpu may not be as potent as Intels give them a bit of time and I can see it making a huge deal of difference, a more robust overall system that will use its parts together much better rather then just having a powerful cpu and a good gpu, with what AMD is trying to do is simply to make the parts work better with each other, to reduce latencies and such, it takes time to rewrite some of the pages in the computer book of design, but AMD is the one really pushing towards doing that more then any other company as a whole it seems.

I will continue to use AMD as I see them going the route of more entwined designs so that maybe you don't need god awful powerful parts but when you do have them, it will show big time.
