I'm trying to copy over a movie file to a new external hdd, but I get this stupid error "Cannot copy War: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)."

now I can still view and play the movie file w/ out any issues, but I can't copy/cut/paste it over to a new hard drive...I tried doing this w/ XP & Vista and it will give me the same error in XP but just freeze w/ Vista.

I also tried compressing it w/ RAR and it gives me an error when I do that, and I even tried burning it onto a DVD and it still doesn't work...

any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've only had CRC errors when dealing with data on optical drives.. ive never even heard of it occuring on magnetic hdds?

last time i saw that with a magnetic drive, the cable was bad. I don't know if that's the case here, as this is an external unit.

Does this come up after a certain amount of time? I would think the drive is either going bad, or possibly its spinning down due to a power saving feature?

Run HD diagnostic program that came with your hard drive... Or download the Ultimate Boot Disc.

I've seen CRC errors before hard drives died. At least with two different drives.

Run a diagnostic and hope that you can backup everything before you RMA the drive.

The only time I've seen CRC errors on a HDD is right before its about to die. I'd run HDTune (not quick scan) if you see red blocks its time for an RMA.

Check your event viewer for system errors listing "disk" as the source that read "bad block/sector detected /Device/HarddiskX/......" if you see them in the log with any frequency its time to replace the drive.

Had that same problem with one of my old drives I forget what it was but it wasn't dieing I think it was a loose cable.

thanks a lot for the suggestions..the error seems to only plague two of my movie files and I had roughly 300gb worth of movie files on this particular external (the drive is only 3 weeks old, & the other 500gb one died...so scrambled and bought a 1tb external to make sure that I back this drive up before it takes a dump on me)

I'll DL those suggested programs and see if they will solve my problem...I'll try switching cables, I guess it can't hurt...even though everything else transferred over to the new external w.out any hitches

CRC is an error-checking system; it is related to to data integrity.

It is not necessarily the indicator of a failing drive, but it would not hurt to download the manufacturer's drive tools and inspecting the drive.

ahh great suggestion!, I totally spaced that one!

I had a few drives that I was getting CRC errors when I was doing cut and paste, but not copy and paste. I never quit figured out 100% what was the problem, but a format of the drives seem to work.
