So this means I'm overheating, right?

Sometimes I'll be playing a game, and after a half hour or so my computer will just turn off, and I have to restart manually. If this means it's overheating, does anyone have any quiet case fans they can reccomend?

Overheating would definitely be my guess, as I had a similar problem. Mine wasn't my comp overheating, but only my video card. I replaced the card and stopped having problems, heh. As for fans, I always recommend www.svc.com for pretty much any type.

Take the cover off your case and ventilate it with a 120v house fan. Is it still locking up?

I used to have a ti4200, and never had these problems, but ever since I got a 9800 pro it's been happening, so maybe the card is overheating? If so, what can you do to fix this?

Kinda sounds liek you have a weak Power Supply. Even though you may have like a 400Watt PS, the cheap ones are not always reliable.

Try the cooling first, then if it still happens, test the Ti4200 back in it. Chances are, if the TI4200 works, it is the PS, although there is a small chance of it being a bad video card.

Put in some more powerful fans, that 9800 pro is putting out a lot more heat than your old card. Try running your case without its covers, and see if the same problem occurs. If it does, than it is probably your power supply.

Do something like this?

I had that fan there since I had 2 36gig 10K rpm Cheetahs and didn't realize how hot they get.

Sometimes if your system overheats it wont let you boot back up until the temps drop down. So see if it is unresponsive to you trying to start it back up, that could indicate overheating.

It could also just be a bad powersupply as already mentioned. The 9800 draws a lot more juice than your old card.

Power issues are generally not time dependant, could happen in 5 seconds or 5 hours. Would be the next place to look though...

Common Mistake, and Common Fix. I had something like this happen to me before.

Im going to try the things in this thread tommorow, but what is the common fix youre talking about?

I just have the stock fans that came with this computer, it was bought retail. So I'm starting to think it's heat related.

At least take off the cover to vent it, if you don't have a house fan handy. It may not fix your heat issue enough to make it stop locking up, but it should make it last longer before it does.

I had the same problem on my system to and it was definitely not the heat. It's most likely the PSU. Does your mobo have an overclocking utility that measures heat?? That's how I found out my problem was the PSU, all the rails were way lower than spec.tolerances and it did not get above 40C..

My vote is for the PSU. My parent's computer did the same thing - I put a 350w Enermax PSU in there and it never happened again. The PSU that came with their computer was a "400w" generic. You get the picture.

This isn't a democracy. ;)

see post #11, heat > power.

Both are possible, but don't put the cart before the horse, check the obvious first (also the easiest to test).
