Depends who you are talking to. Nvidia guy will tell you yes, the GTX260 is better. An ATI guy will probably tell you that the 4870 is better. A neutral guy might say they are both good.
i would kinda agree to that, although I have always been a nvidia person and all ATi can do to fight back nvidia cards is to dual sandwich gpu their new 4870x2 series
Before the 180 drivers:
4870 > GTX 260
4850 > 9800GTX
After the 180 drivers
GTX 260 > 4870
9800GTX > 4850
The 8800/9800GT is actually pretty close to the 4850 in performance now.
The current generation 9800gtx + is able to go pass the 4850. Along with drivers after 180...performance is even better.
After reading some reviews on the GTX260 216 core with the 180 series drivers it looks like its a better buy than the 4870 now. Its cheaper and faster. I hope Ati can counter with something....
Please don't reply in my threads or reply to my post at all. 80-90'C for a 4870x2 under load is pretty hot still. But still numbers and quantity still counts.

I suggest you to wait until new Nvidia 181 drivers. I'm sure gtx260 will beat even 4870X2 with easy and 9800 GTX+ will beat ordinary 4870. Try to imagine what forceware 182 will do

The 4870 512MB should be compared to the GTX260 while the GTX260 Core216 should be compared to the 4870 1GB, IMO. This is because both are a small refresh of the original cards that launched last summer.
I think it depends on the game, however if you look at a review like this one:

The 4870 wins in most games.
The 180 drivers improve performance up to 10% at 2560x1600 but are sometimes slower at lower resolutions:

Drivers should not be an issue. From what I've read, most ATI driver problems affect people who run the 4870X2. I have not had any significant driver issues with my 4850. Certainly no BSODs or crashes that could be attributed to the Catalyst drivers.

I bought a 4870 512MB when it came out because at the time the GTX 260 was still over $400. It's a different story today and you would be foolish to pickup a 4870 512MB over a GTX 260. I'm looking at picking up a GTX 280 (from EVGA or BFG) and stepping up if something else comes along within the next three months.
<clears throat> Yes, it is of the utmost importance in my life that ATI makes a competing product. I have been feeling quite ill since the 180 drivers. Life has seemingly lost its meaning.I hope Ati can counter with something....
The old GTX 260 is right there with the new version, the HD4870 512mb is a horrible buy with the old GTX 260 pricing the same or less.
Old GTX 260 is right behind the new version... most of the time it's 1-2 fps difference.
HD4870 512mb <M<O<N<S<T<E<R<K<I<L<L< GTX 260 192core < GTX 260 216core = HD4870 1gb IMO
Haha, you're an idiot. How does "IMO" opinion fit in with facts? Either a card is faster than another, or it isn't. You can't opinion speeds

I was going to say the same thing to him, and then I saw his user name and thought, 'oh'
Ati beta tester here: wait till atis stream drivers
Why are you noobie kids crying? It was early in the morning and a typo. Nice job pointing that out though, here's a fucking cookie.
O and yeah Tri-9800GTX beats a single 4870 1gb you dumbass ;if you're gonna be calling names.
