...to connect a SAS drive using an ordinary SATA cable and SATA power cable. He did this by cutting the relevant sides of both plugs off so they could be plugged in.

Here's the rather predictable result:

Did you remind him that if he plugs the system into a 220 line instead of a 110 that the drives spin twice as fast? :D

Yeah I'm going to take a leap here and say that the scorch marks reflected on the 12.0v power pins (p13-p15) indicate that both the PCB and internal components have been shorted (and are in a non-functional state).
 
It may not be broken. I mean if you spent $5 to $10 for a replacement header (digikey, mouser ...) and resoldered that on it is possible that the PCB did not suffer any damage.

I'd say that possibility is slim.
 
other than this being a nice 'ol college try'. i'm assuming the burn out is due to the power pins not being aligned perhaps crossed due to alignment issues.... otherwise why did it blow :D
 
lol. Can you fill us in on your boss's background in tech? My boss decided to mangle a PCI modem card and hacksaw his PC to get them both to fit together. Your boss isn't named Larry Cook is he?

By the looks of that scorch mark, it most definitely released the magic smoke :)
 
Real question is, how expensive was the drive and what valuable information did it contain? LOL
 
Report it to your superior superiors and get the idiot fired please. People like that just need to disappear. They cause pain and more pain for those of us that actually THINK BEFORE WE ACT!

On the other hand, it shows how the IT professional is elevated above the "masses" and if nothing else should have taught the guy a lesson without too much pain. In the land of the blind etc etc :)
