Is it some kind of rule for some companies to put these randomly generated cheesy characters all over the box and on the heatsink/fan housing of every new video card? This trend seems to plague many ATI card manufacturers, although some Nvidia cards follow this trend too, and often just makes many of these cards flat out ugly. Who the f*ck thought this was a brilliant idea in the first place. I just got this and yeah...
The card would look much better if they had just gone with something like their logo in fancy lettering with like a piano black finish and maybe some air brushed red. Unfortunately, they went out of their way to make it absolutely hideous.
 
no offense, but didn't you know what it looked like before you bought it? why not just get something else that you like the appearance of?
 
lol, I can agree to an extent. I prefer simple class but I think at some point it is a visual indication to differentiate different products for those who cannot decipher the numbers. Not to say that the bigger the gun (or anatomical parts) the better the card, but if I saw a review for that card and went into the store, I would know which to buy. I wonder how much they spent on that graphic though - personally, I think the reference designs look best.
 
yes, they are ugly.

the 4890 from XFX doesn't have an ugly character. it has an ugly decal, but at least it's not some CGI character.

you could always install an after-market cooler, too.
 
Isn't this video card in a closed case where you can't see it?

I guess I just put more emphasis on performance rather than appearance.

In the case of video cards, appearances can be deceiving ;)

Not if you have a mATX build with a window and the motherboard is laying down rather than mounted up.

I agree with you OP. If the girl or CGI girl looks like crap... why bother putting it on?

I knew it was hideous, but I purchased as part of a combo deal and care way more about the performance/price than I do about appearance. I guess the point I was trying to make is how needless most of these images are and how much better a lot of cards would look without them.

I agree, but my case and many cases have windows where you can see some of the goodies like the video card. Fortunately, I only have to look at the side of the card which does not share the same ugly coloring as the surface of the housing. But even still, somewhere in the back of my mind the presence of that ridiculous image still bothers me.
 
you may want to let your hair down a bit, life gets much more stressful than what your vidcard sticker looks like.

and who uses the stock heatsink anyways?

FWIW, after it's run in your system a few weeks and heated up/cooled down a few times, the 'sticker' adhesive loses a LOT of it's stickiness. On Sapphire cards, the decal almost pops off the card accidentally, and certainly if you put some effort into it, they are easily removable leaving no trace behind.

That just leaves you a nice, red, heatsink housing, then. (Your example looks like it might be a BIT trickier - the translucent ones are usually easiest to remove, and that one looks like it is quite opaque...but it may be worth trying from one corner to see if it's worth doing)

Granted, but my point is that they put many of these images on there unnecessarily instead opting for a simpler better looking design schemes. Many people also use the stock HS and fan rather than spending an extra $30+ on another one + installation time. Generally I find my case cooling adequate to leave the stock one on it even when overclocking.

I'll take a peek at it when I get home, I think that black finish might extend underneath the sticker. Would look much better if I could just peel it off easily.
 
just a thought but given where these things are manufactured perhaps the images appeal to a wider audience than just our little neck of the global neighborhood.

to be honest I haven't ever even noticed what the stickers look like

and once you try after market cooling you will stop saying the stock fan works well enough

those suckers are loud

Oh so true... I wish the image on my videocard cooler was the biggest problem I had to face... :rolleyes:
 
stick something over it? better yet. go buy yourself a better aftermarket cooler? if that doesn't quell your aesthetic rage.. i dont know what will :)
 
the silly sticker really bothers some people? I guess we have run out of real things to rant about...

Honestly the sticker was the deciding factor when I bought my 4850. At the time there were half a dozen cards with damn near the same price and warranty. I bought the one that had the least obnoxious sticker.

wow. I cant imagine even being that concerned about something I will never see and has zero impact on how it performs. its a freaking sticker thats all and will be upside down and out of view.
 
Yep, video card decals are pretty lame nowadays.

I like my eVGA 8800 GTS's sticker though. It's just a nice looking E logo, looks great.

What if the heatsinks were made with a raw Aluminum, square-edge, Lian-Li sort of look? That would be rad...
 
I don't see the point of the stickers. It probably costs more to apply a sticker vs. just keeping it bare. I'll never actually see the card after putting it in/taking it out so just make the card cheaper and omit the silly graphics.

Normally I would agree with the people saying it's not worth thinking about, but your example is bad enough to be noteworthy. There is no appeal in that graphic, ever. It is necessarily lame in all universes.

Because most companies use the same reference design, they need something to differentiate themselves from other companies.. most people base their decisions on brand recognition and price... smart people base it more on warranty/support...

Seems to be more an ATI thing though like others have pointed out... Nvidia cards are a bit better...
 
Anyone remember the good ol' days, when coolers did not have enough space to put a sticker??? Ahhh simpler times... =P

I definitely agree. Plenty of space to stick a sticker.
And I agree with a previous point. In a market system, there are bound to be people who feel the opposite. They buy based on the prettiest sticker. Case in point: "Wow those racing stripes on that mustang must give it an extra 50 hp!"
 
No I was saying that I see a sticker... right on the fan..

... or the reason could be is that if you want a really cool looking card, you have to use water cooling... like my Watercool Heatkiller GTX285 block...

The only time I see my video cards is when something messes up in the case, or I'm upgrading, other wise I could care less if theirs a model of some dude drawn in crayon on it.
 
I have the ASUS HD4890 with the weird black knight on it. But you can peel it off no problemo.
