So since I had 2 outta 20 disk die in my fileserver (raid6 FTW), I've been thinking about consolidating into a smaller server. I really wanted to use two Supermicro 5in3 SATA racks that I had lying around but couldn't find a small case to use them in. I've never done any case modding before so I figure it was time. The results so far are horrible, I can see myself getting better with practice.

Case: 7 bay duplicator case
7 x 5.25" bays gives me room for two racks plus maybe put in something else like a fan controller, raid monitor, etc in the free bay. Dimensions are 14" x 17" x 7 (HxDxW).

Motherboard: iEi Technology KINO-780AM2
http://www.ieiworld.com/product_groups/industrial/content.aspx?keyword=KINO-780&gid=00001000010000000001&cid=09050652111816087425&id=09069696333360342284
mini-ITX AM2 that supports ECC and a x16 pci-e slot!! tested with a Athlon 4050e (in there now), Althon X3 435, 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 ECC dimms, Areca 1680ix-24, Areca 1260, and an Adaptec 31605. All seem to work.

CPU: AMD Althon 4050e
45W, but it's temporary as I got an Athlon 605e coming.

RAM: forget the brand, but 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 ECC dimms
Will probably move to 2 x 2GB.

HW RAID card: Areca 1260 or Adaptec 31605
Cant's decide. I like the ML connectors on the 31605, but I like Areca's UI better than Adaptecs.

HD Cages: 2 x Supermicro M35T-1B

PSU: undecided. should i go modular? wish I could find that Silverstone SFX size st45sf.

Other stuff: I'm gonna put fan adapters and 120mm fans on the back of the Supermicro M35T's like JonCl did on his Typhoon case. Probably a 92mm exhaust fan on the back for positive air pressure vs the 120mm fans blowing in.

Now for the pics and progress:

Bay shelf tabs removed and back cut out, from the back. How people dremel smooth cuts, let alone cool shapes, is beyond me.

Ghetto mobo tray! .05" aluminum, pop rivets, bolts, some funky L bracket to support it.

Test mini-ITX mobo and spare raid card for sizing.

Next Steps:

I'll take pics of my hacked together back plate later, it's pretty pathetic. I need to redo it, figure out some way to secure the pci-e cards, figure out the fan situation, PSU situation, and hope it cools itself ok.

Wiat, why do you need a new PSU for a 10 HDDs? The EA500 is pretty decent.

Oh and good luck with the case mod!

Looks pretty good so far; I love those drives cages!

500w should be plenty for this rig.

Yeah I'm really diggin this case/setup. But it would have to be in addition to my vmware server since it doesn't have room for my supermicro mobo...keep us posted, this looks good.
