I'm looking to mod a standard atx power supply into my new hornet pro pc case. Problem is the size of the ATX power supply has to be relatively small.. i have a atx lian li psu next to me and measured to be 3.5" tall, 6" wide, and 5.5" in depth.. now if i were to get something with a little less depth.. be easier.. i've noticed some psu seem to be kinda long... anyone know of a good psu that has standard atx measurements.. (newegg can only show me the standard of atx.. not really the dimensions)

I have used the corsair 400 before and it was pretty short.

Actually I found the perfect PSU for my project to restore this Hornet Pro. The Hornet Pro is using an Enermax SFX 270W PSU measuring at (HxWxD) of 2.5"x 5"x 4"... with that being said... that's a damn small psu.

Thinking about the Athena Power AP-MP4ATX55FEP8 550W 80 Plus Cert MicroATX PSU

(HxWxD): 2.5" x 5" x 5.12"

See the beauty of this is I believe it has the same whole line up as the SFX PSU my hornet pro is currently using.. the extra 1.12" depth gives me about 1" for cable work between Disc drive and PSU.

Sounds like i'll be able to revamp this little old hornet pro... now if i only had the money..

but it's only 300watts ... you can't have any fun with that :D. Now the Athena Power one... 550watts.. gives me some options..

by that I mean mATX gaming

Not really. If you think about it, that Athena will probably provide the same options or even less as the Seasonic for the following reasons:

Athena Power does not have a proven track record like Seasonic. In other words, there is ZERO proof that Athena PSU is fully capable of providing its rated wattage. In addition, its 33A on the +12V rail is low compared to other 50W PSUs with 42A on the +12V rail. That's a red flag right there. Also, look at the amount of certifications that Athena has: only three, typical amount for low quality PSUs. The Seasonic has 7.

Other issues with the Athena:
- What temperature was it rated at?
- Was it rated at peak or continuous load?
- Who actually made the PSU?

So with those six problems/issues with the Athena, you're gonna have to think long and hard if it's worth the risk to your hardware with an unknown PSU.

Here's a thread on that PSU over at JonnyGURU:

And before you say it, no 80Plus certification isn't proof of its quality at all since 80Plus does not measure ripple and they test at 25C IIRC.

I wouldn't recommend a 300W PSU over a 550W PSU if I didn't have a good reason for doing so. Danny already took care of explaining why.
