Slow unRAID Copy Speeds

Hey guys,

I'm experiencing some seriously slow copy speeds with my unRAID server. I opened a thread on the unRAID forums but didn't get any hits, and also scoured the unRAID wiki with no luck.

Maybe these speeds are normal based on my rigs, but they seem a bit slow to me. For example; If I initiate a transfer from my HTPC to transfer a 1Gb movie from one share to another on 2 different disks within the server, I get transfer speeds of 10 to 12 Mb/s. I understand that essentially I'm transferring from the server, to my HTPC, then back to the server, but it still seems a bit slow. I tried initiating a transfer within the server with putty using command line but never got it to work. I have even less luck with Midnight Commander. Plus, that seems like a pretty big pain in the ass just to move a file efficiently.

Do any of you networking gurus or unRAID veterans have any suggestions for an unRAID noob?

Thanks!

Gotta agree with Danny on it may be a network vs an unRaid problem. I do that same lazy move often and get much better speeds than that. I have learned that a copy-delete vs. a move always goes faster (which makes sense), but I don't recall a move being that slow.

Are your htpc-to-unRaid copies at an expected speed? Or file transfers between 2 non-unRaid PCs?

My htpc to unRaid copy speeds are the same, and like an idiot I didn't try transferring between two non-unRaid PC's to test the speed. I don't really have 2 PC's wired on my network though. Aside from the HTPC and unRaid PC's I'm connected wirelessly with wireless N.

I do remember when I did my initial transfer to the unRaid array after setting it up I was getting copy speeds of 30 - 40 Mb/s.

I'll connect my laptop to the ethernet switch and test some transfers between it and the HTPC and poke around in my router settings some more. I also read the wiki linked above about improving performance. I'll try using a different ethernet cable as well.

How full are your drives? Low 10-20MB/s seems slow, even for RAID-4. If your drives are really full, and you have a bit of fragmentation and are hammering read/ write in different areas of the disk... maybe. Then again, if you get 130MB/s on outer edges of 1TB disks the inner parts are often in the 60-80MB/s range. So if I apply that scaling to 30MB/s new at the outer edge of disks... it is possible, especially with wireless. Still does sound very slow.

Wireless is going to be slow... try wired to eliminate variables easily.

My drives are about half full each. I have my HTPC and unRaid server both wired to a gigabit ethernet switch which is wired to my wireless router. If I initiate a transfer from my laptop, I get super slow transfers of course, but if I initiate from my HTPC I get maybe twice as fast, 10 - 12 Mb/s.

This was a completely new experience to me, installing, configuring, and using unRaid. I have basic experience with command line and linux, so maybe it's a configuration issue on my end. I almost wish I would have went with Windows Home Server, just for the sake of some of the plugins, such as auto-moving my Recorded TV.

I'm running the unRaid server headless right now or I'd check, but what if I have my HDD's configured as IDE in the BIOS? Would that significantly slow it down? I read on a forum on lime-tech's site that an IDE HDD would get 10-15 Mb/s write speeds.
