Slow Start Up Problem

My friend has a problem with his PC where he will turn it on after being off for around 12 hours and the PC will take forever to boot up. It finally gets to the desktop and just sits there for a bit. What could be causing this? Really weird that even the POST is taking forever. Here are the specs:

Q6600 stock
GIGABYTE GA-EP43T-UD3L
eVGA GTX 260 Black Edition
2x2 gigs Patriot
650 watt Rosewill

Start swapping out parts and see which part is the culprit. My bet is the motherboard.
 
have you tried defragging the hd? Does he have a lot of programs set to start up when windows starts?
