Slow computer with good configuration

Yeah dude, the problem is simply this: That PC is old. 512MB of RAM is the bare minimum for just doing simple tasks these days. That Celeron D is a relatively slow CPU by today's standards. Not to mention that you should have already upgraded to SP3.

The only thing you can do at this point if you want more performance is to just buy a new PC. There's really no point in upgrading that PC itself as it is several generations out of date and incompatible with many parts today. In addition, DDR RAM is still relatively expensive.

@ caniba
Most of his system's specs are in those links.

I can't open them at work.:)

Ahh gotcha. Here's the specs of the OP's current PC:
Intel Celeron D 331
Unknown motherboard brand with two RAM slots and Intel Springdale-G i865G
512MB DDR 400 RAM stick
WD 80GB PATA drive
External Toshiba 160GB USB drive
ATI Radeon 9250
Unknown PSU
Unknown case
Windows XP Pro SP2

See what I mean by the PC being too old and slow?

Get rid of the Celeron. This is a system KILLER! You can find a decent upgrade on eBay. I had a similar system and went with a regular Pentium and the speed was definitely noticeable.

It would help.Still the main problem is not corrected. What kind of programs do you run

would it help if I upgrade to 1GB or 1.5GB RAM?

As DrDoU said, it would help. But only get that 1GB stick of RAM if it costs around $20 to $25 shipped. If higher than that, not really worth it.

But the main issue is still the CPU and hard drive: Both are extremely slow by today's standards. In fact, I'm more than willing to bet that a cheaper $250 Netbook would outperform that setup.

Not really, the main issue is the CPU. ...And upgrading the CPU to something current would require a motherboard with a modern CPU socket, which will take newer RAM... etc etc. Your computer is just behind by a few generations.

dadili: you should accept the fact that it will be harder to throw away/give away your current PC for free than getting a new decent one. These guys can propose you a new setup complete with the pricing if you like. What do you normally use your PC for if we don't mind asking?

I wouldn't say the CPU is the issue...in most cases the Ram is the issue. For basic web browsing, Flash Player kills old systems because of the resource drain. It doesn't take much CPU for most of that stuff. Even MS Office doesn't require heavy CPU. Most of today's slow down issues is memory hogs. You DON'T need a dual + core system for basic business needs. Ram on the other hand is a must.

Don't get me wrong, I would support the idea of investing in a new system rather then upgrading it, but you didn't mention what programs you used or what exactly it is used for. Even $300 desktops from Wal-Mart will out perform that PC with ease. TigerDirect has refurb eMachines with pretty good power for less then $250 often. Just check back regularly...they change pretty much daily.
