I know its probably been discussed in another thread, but I couldn't find it...

Just wondering if a PPU even necessary with SLI, ... and if it will even work with SLI,...

Watercooling + Asus SLI Premium+ XFX 7800GT's in SLI+X-Fi Platinum+Hauppage Tuner = no free PCI slot... :(

If you want gameplay physcis, it will be needed.
The HavockFX solution only gives you eyecandy.
But there will be a PCI-E 1x PPU released...

Terra - Date is yet unkown...

Just remember, the graphics core is for processing and rendering data to analog information on the monitor. The PPU is dedicated for phisycal calculations.

There may be a game or program that can utilize that much efficiency. but in the mean time, it would be overkill.

They might just make a workstation card that has a dedicated graphics and physycs core on one card...

I would take out the tuner for a PPU when some good games come out.

from what i've seen in the tech demo's and from the readings i have read, trying to compare gpu's to ppu's is like comparing apples to oranges. from what i've gotten out of this new technology its going to add a new level of eyecandy that gpu's cant give you. think of ppu's as adding a whole new instruction set to the gpu instruction set so to speak. so to answer your question no its not overkill. my understanding of the technology could be wrong though.

My experience tells me that you need as much graphics processing power as you cuold possibly get if you expect to run a PhysX game smoothly with high graphic detail setting. So yes, SLI with the current generation of cards are probably recommended.

I'd say drop the TV tuner for a PPU and get a USB tuner.

Seconded. You should be able to get a tuner on par in quality in either USB2 or Firewire interface.

For me, its just not having a external sound card. Then again, my hearing sucks, so the difference for me is not buying an additional sound card(I use headphones to game anyways) and using the only available expansion slop on my motherboard (mATX board, with SLi).

I wouldnt drop anything yet, just sit on the order. A PPU wont be a practical addition for another few months.

if someone has SLI, a PPU is definately not Overkill..

in the PC enthusiasts world, nothing is overkill when it comes to features and performance..

eg.

with SLI and no PPU you may get 45FPS in a game (but at a lower resolution, due to not running SLI)..

with SLI and a PPU you get that 60FPS @ higher Resolution And the nice Physics enabled..

simplified example but you get the point.
