Hi, I just found these forums... looks like a good place :)

I am not up to date on the SLi technology, and I was just wondering what's compatible with it. SLi is nVidia only? (if so is ATI planning on releasing something similar?) and it's not just any PCI-E cards... they have to be specifically designed for SLi? and if the cards are specifically designed for SLi, are they backwards compatible with non SLi motherboards?

edit: also for the power supply, think this would work?

SLi is an Nvidia only thing. It's their proprietary technology. Similar to what 3DFX had back in the day with the Voodoo2 12MB cards. Although the acronym is different and the way things rendering is divided up between the cards differes, the concept is the same.

It is only for PCI-E motherboards, and the cards do work in motherboards that don't support SLi, but since you can only install one card in a non-SLi motherboard, it just works as a single card.
 
Yes, currently SLI is Nvidia only. ATI Is planning to release it's own solution, called AMR (ATI Multi Rendering). It's similar to SLI, except one card renders one half of the screen, while another renders the other have (therbuy, doubling the power, IMO) as apposed to Nvidias, which has 2 versions which work better for diffrent games, one versions one card render one frame, then the next card renders the other frame, or, one card renders one line of the screen, while the next card renders the next, heres alittle image I made to help illustrate:

Currently, the Only cards that work with SLI are PCI-E Nvidia cards, from the 6 line (6600GT, 6800NU, 6800GT and 6800Ultra) they have to be the same card, as well as being from the same company (EVGA, XFX Etc). And yes, they are compatible with all Motherboards. You can buy 1 card, and an SLI Mobo, then save up, and get a second card

You're gonna need AT LEAST 500 watts from a NAME-BRAND PSU company, like Antec, to run in SLI fully stable.
 
not true, you can have a 400Watt psu, Like an antec Trupower 380 watt or so can be used. Youll only experience difficultys if you start OCing.
 
Id still get a better PSU though.

Isnt ATI going to do this SLI gig too soon? I thought I read that somewhere.

It would be more helpful if it wasn't wrong.

nVidia SLI:

Alternate Frame Rendering- what you said it was, every other frame rendered by each card. Delivers most performance boost.

Split Frame Rendering- each card renders some percentage near half of the screen optimally, fluctuates.

What you drew- 3dfx SLI- Scan Line Interleave- each Voodoo2 renders every other line on the screen.

Anyway, you were close. ;)
 
Oh, well I read in an SLI review, basically what I posted, maybe I just read it incorrectly, or misinterpretated

But everything else is pretty much correct.
