Skipping DDR2

yep, skipping over DDR2 to spite the propriatory movement i've been seeing in the PC industry.

My 939 3800+ oced with wc, 2gb of good DDR ram, and a 7900GT will hold me over.
 
Yes, I'll wait it out. 2.8 ghz from my "puny" s754 3400+ Venice and 2.6 from my "old" 3700+ Clawhammer is more than enough for me right now. Both systems run just fine on 1 gb of DDR400, too.

funny thing is i'll play just about any game out there. well, maybe not the sims....or MMO's i'm not too fond of because of the cost and time needed to play them...but thats besides the point. i think i got over 4 years out of an overclocked voodoo3 back in the day. it wasn't pretty, but hell i did it and i plan to do it again! i got 3 or 4 years out of my previous card - radeon 9000 pro. now i've got dual 7900 gto's and i plan to make them last 5 years minimum. how you ask? suck it up and turn down details:) it isn't pretty, but its a lot nicer looking than a diminishing bank account.
 
If I upgrade beginning of 2008, then DDR2 will probably be rare enough that it will be more expensive than DDR3 anyway. But in '08 several DX10 games will be out so we'll all need the highest-end procs/ram/vidcards at any rate...
 
Yes, if you must play the latest games then the newer equipment will be a necessity. But I'm not into the latest and greatest games so my setup will last a while longer.
 
Even then, overclocking and some judicious tweaking of the video settings (to knock off the bits that take significant processing power without making a major impact on the appearance of the game) can give you a good 2-3 years on a given system without really needing to upgrade. For example, GeForce 6-series is still fairly respectable (although getting kinda long in the tooth), and 7-series can give good if not top settings on current games. If your system was high end, it's not going to outright suck for a long time after.

Why can't you just wait and upgrade to whatever makes the most sense to you when you are ready to upgrade? :rolleyes:
 
I have still got DDR 400 ram in both of my machines. I will probably wait untill DDR3 is mainstream before I upgrade my CPU/Mobo. I am afraid my single core A64 is about to get obsoleted fast in new games.
 
If you have decent clocks you'll still be alright for a while. Think itl be a few more years before games start requiring dual core. Heck, most still don't even take advantage of *edit* two cores.

How exactly do most games not even take advantage of one core? Think your games are performing calcs on their pixy calculators made of fairy dust? :rolleyes:

One as a pronoun, not the number. I probably should have used a different pronoun like it, but you get the idea.
Was saying they don't require one or even make proper use of one. (Exchange the pronoun one for dualcore in that sentence too).
 
My system will be three years old in a few months, really want a dual core though, I want to do a few things at once!

edit: I've waited this long, might as well see what DDR3's all about, maybe I'll skip dual cores too and go straight to quad.

the problem at that point isn't processing power, it's hard drive read/write speeds, imho.

technically, you can burn/surf the internet/play CSS/run antivirus, if you have quad core. Two gigs of ram could comfertably cache that, and a 7900GT would have no trouble running it, but your Hard drive, even if it was some crazy 15k $500 guy, would choke.

The alternative is raid 0 but that doesnt help a whole lot and requres two of them $500 drives.
 
Systems are becoming obsolete less rapidly which extends shelf life.

Also many have older 2nd & 3rd rigs they maintain to keep resales on older parts firm.

Check out the FS threads and you'll see DDR1 being snapped up quickly at decent prices

Bottom line: skipping a generation or 2 is becoming common.
 
Agreed. DDR400 Crucial Ballistix at Newegg is $77.49 after a $30 mail in rebate. This stuff is crazy fast (will do just under 280 mhz in my system) in single channel mode. There is still lots of life in s754 and s939 IMO.
