SimCity Patch Introduces More Bugs

I thought the point was that this was supposed to be a fun game, not a city simulator.

There are Godzilla and Alien attacks... I thought that made the realism expectations pretty clear from the getgo.

I live in Houston, and if we had realistic map sizes we'd have to micromanage 600 square miles of city, and that's just not fun. There is a reason that in real life people are paid to do this job and its broken down into various departments that all have specific divided responsibilities. Too much for one "God mayor".

Except in SC5 you get 2km x 2km. That is it. Most NCAA colleges have that much area for their campus. That is how small an area we're taking.

SC had 4X the area. And was still fun
CitiesXL has 16x16km! And is still manageable.

You don't need 600sq miles...but having an area larger than a few city blocks would be a nice starting point.

Like I said though, for one plot, yes, but remember your "region" is really your city at least in single player mode. The individual city size is less important since the region shares tourists, workers, education, services, and physical resources together as one "mega city".

Ideally, you can either have one mega-city or several cooperating smaller cities on a region. If you are trying to play five mega-cities and great works together, it'd melt the brain of the average person and become work instead of play IMO.

And really if you do just go with one mega-city, then you are really doing away with the whole concept of city specialization and trade, because if the city is big enough then you can have enough room to do absolutely everything from heavy industry to tourism to education to refining to whatever.

You got to love Electronic Arts , it used to be a decent company now it is a farm for narrow minded single focus money grabbing people who pretend to run a business.

Ducman,
I know i'll get flamed for saying this, but you sound like an EA marketer. *EVERY* positive point you have made about the game has some bug/flaw to it that makes the intended functionality not actually exist.
Specialized City? Due to lack of space you end up bulldozing half your city to fit all the *required* buildings to make your industry work, as well as each city ending up being exactly like your other specialized city, but with X and Y instead of A and B buildings.

Watch individual Sims? That go to different jobs everyday, if they make it to them, if they don't get stuck in congo lines, if they manage to recognize the industry zones even existing.

Making a "megacity" by building an entire region? They are in reality only 4 connected to one another, due to the un-editable highway connections, not to mention they are butt ugly perfect cubes across an otherwise blank landscape.

And then there are is the mountain of missing, broken, or "fixed by not really fixed" features that have been mentioned countless times.

If you think the game is good, then good for you, but I say that you have incredibly low standards and bad taste to boot.

This so much...
The "good" points that they're trying to sell aren't even working properly.

He has no idea what he's talking about. Either he plays the game for about an hour each time and then just starts a new city or an EA employee assigned to troll us.

Search the SimCity launch thread for posts by "Ducman69" and you'll see I was arguing passionately about how idiotic the always on DRM is, and how people deserve nothing less than a full refund.

No, I don't work for EA, and yes I have been on this forum for ages.

If you make your cities cubes, they will be cubes. It would have been nice to have variety in map sizes with different shapes, not just terrain. I have just about every strategy game out there, and yes I enjoy playing SimCity (and no, I wasn't part of the launch because I don't do preorders). If you like CitiesXL better, then more power to you, but no one is talking about CitiesXL in the gaming section because few people play it because its just not as fun. People are raging against SimCity because of its name recognition and hope that if enough people talk shit about it it will fail horribly and the industry won't resort to this draconian DRM.

If this were released as an offline game, I am convinced people wouldn't be this critical. And regarding bugs, I can't remember a recent title I played that didn't have soon after launch. Especially in free-to-play games, where it seems you're still a beta tester the first few months.

I think you're a little off-base here.

What are similar games to SimCity that have less bugs and are more fun to play for around $30? How much time have you played CitiesXL for example? Do a search for "steamcommunity CitiesXL bugs" and you can see the game even though changed very little is still buggy as hell. And maps are bigger, sure, but is it more fun? Check the gaming subforum right here on [H]ard and see what little discussion there is about it. Why isn't everyone CitiesXL? My opinion is very low-expecations from the get-go and no Origin fiasco. If that's off base, please elaborate.

I don't have the game - glad I avoided it. But even so, it's clear to any casual observer that you are correct. No flames here. +1 for the "funny because it's true" post :)

You make a good (albeit very sad) point: That even in its current state, SimCity is somehow the best out there, even in its current state. As others have stated, hopefully a dev can come along and do it right.

What I was trying to say though is that while their DRM is retarded and they had a shitty launch, the real reasons people are so upset is that the game is broken on a fundamental level. The game is called SimCity for a reason--it's supposed to be a city simulation. If there are not real relationships between the various metrics your'e supposed to juggle in the game, then it's all just a facade and I think that greatly detracts from the 'fun' of the game. You should feel like you really solved your city's X problem because of what you chose to do, and how you chose to do it.

Add onto this all the overwhelming evidence that this was a cash-grab with very little effort actually allotted to making a good game, and the hate is deserved.

Ummm... How about Simcity 4...on Steam for $20

Oh,and it actually works.

I love reading SimCity threads they are the best. I dont have the game but from just reading what Dunman69 is trying to defend Mx & EA from this attrocious title is almost like an article I read justifying the Older Boston Bomber from committing the crime he did because he was a "boxer" and maybe he had "brain damage" Sorry those 2 are responsible for there actions and should face the aftermath just like EA & MX should take all the blame for the crap they put out time and time again with SimCity being the triggering point. I hate people trying to rationalize why someone may have did something and not lay the full responsibility on that person/company.

$20 USD? I paid $5. :D Well worth it. I also have it on CD that I picked up for $10 new.

SimCity 5 isn't bad in theory. What DucMan is saying makes it sounds like an awesome game. It really could be. But, those features just aren't working correctly. There are too many bugs to make it enjoyable to where you can have 4 cities running in a single region successfully.

Sadly, it's just not getting fixed. It has the potential to be a great game, even with the shitty DRM (which I cannot play the game unless I'm at home for the most part as some hotels, work, free wi-fi doesn't allow the correct ports or blocks gaming). It's just not there, and they aren't making much headway into making it better.

It's an enjoyable game until you hit a point where those bugs are starting to affect you more and more.

So you believe you've played more hours than I have? Whats your Origin ID and post a screenshot of YOUR biggest city.

I have definitely not, in fact I've probably played 5-10 hours max...and then realized it was an exercise in futility...why on god's green earth would anyone waste countless hours playing something that's inherently broken from day 1 until probably eternity.

Also if you remove the fudged #'s, Tropico4 does a way better job of simulation from home to work to happiness etc....albeit at a smaller scale. Just because you have buried your head in the sand and convinced yourself that this game is perfectly fine and playable, does not mean that is the truth.

Decade old game that feels a decade old. Besides, you're saying don't buy Simcity, buy Simcity. :p

A decade old game for cheap that is enjoyable and actually works.

Or.

A new unmatched utterly broken game that's going to cost at a minimum 3x what the old game does... Did I mention the new one is fundamentally broken?

There really isn't a choice here.

I for one hope they do eventually patch everything and get it working as planned. Only then will I consider buying it.

I doubt that all these users whom are intelligent enough to find the numerous bugs (before and after 2.0) and articulate them, that EA chose to ignore are lying.
I enjoy plenty of games that have bugs, they suck, but as long as you're not losing an entire city or something I'm fine. And yes, I had heard of such issues at launch, but not since the last patch, and I haven't had any issues with any of mine or yes I would be angry if I lost my time investment.

Like I said, I had the sewage bug myself, but its obvious when you look at the map whats wrong, and I demolished the road and rebuilt and and was fine. And of course I had the same issues as everyone with sims always taking the shortest path, so I developed circular suburbs with mixed commercial and gridded industrial and had to do some tricks like put dirt roads in the middle of long roads so people don't have a stop sign or light but can still turn around to get to the other side of the street. I also avoid X intersections at all costs, round corners when I can, and make my intersections staggered T ones, but those are more efficient in real life too anyway. Its not ideal, but still fun even with the dumb citizens, and they are addressing some of those traffic limitations such as mass transits getting stuck in a loop between stations (I fixed that too with the workaround of simply not building any stops right near the station).

Forget the bugs. Hell forget the crappy online all the time DRM. If it doesn't have terrain building, water pipes, large regions, fire and police that work properly, one way streets, connections to other regions that work properly and many more things it is not SimCity. It is a stripped down POS that was cheaply and poorly designed to get EA quick cash. Period. No true fan of SimCity, the real SimCity, would even consider calling this pile of shit SimCity. It is EA garbage and it's the very reason I haven't bought an EA game in years.

Don't forget no highways you can design, cities smaller than the small town I live in. Even if it ran perfectly and didn't have any issues at all it is still not SimCity.

For those of you that enjoy it then more power to you. I for one will not be duped by the bullshit EA continues to shovel.

See you later I have a nice big fun city going on in SimCity 4.

They should have taken SimCity 3000 and updated it to work on modern hardware/software with better visuals, more sounds/music, new buildings, vehicles, people, animations, etc...

Basically make a SimCity 3000 HD version.

Then if they wanted to have multiplayer, then make the neighboring cities your buddies/friends with whom you share stuff with and/or coop where more than one person can manage a city and/or allow one person to be the mayor of the city and assign different roles to others such as building roads, pipes, zoning, etc..
