ordered a new MB and other various parts. 2 questions:

1: should I plug my mouse and keyboard in the USB 3 or USB 2 slots? does it matter?

2: I have a black WD HD. Should I plug it in the SATA 3Gb/s or SATA 6Gb/s? Does it specify on the HD itself which speed it's capable of?

1.)

Performance wise it won't matter at all. For the first boot, I'd plug them into the 2.0 ports though, as you may need to install drivers manually for the 3.0 ports ( I have had to do this for all my 3.0 compatible motherboards).

After that I'd just leave them in the 2.0 ports as it will make no difference what so ever. Keyboards and mice simply do not even come close to using the bandwidth of a USB 2.0 port. They'd even be fine in a USB1.1 port if you still have one without making a difference. The reason I'd leave them there is so that you free up your USB 3.0 ports in case you have something that can take advantage of USB 3.0 you want to plug into them down the road.

2.) It won't make much of a difference either way. The 3Gbps vs 6Gbps refers only to the SATA interface transfer speed. The hard drive itself is going to be MUCH slower than either of those interface transfer speeds.

The only time you are going to see anything remotely close to the SATA transfer speeds is when you have reads from the drive cache, but the drive cache is usually 32Mb or less on those drives, so it's not something you are going to see much of a difference from.

Whether or not your drive supports the faster 6Gbps standard is usually written on the drive. If you can't find it on there, just search the drive code (something like WD5002AALX or something similar. On older drives its four letters, like EARS or something like that) If you search for this you should be able to find which standard the drive supports.

If you want to make sure you get the most out of your drive cache transfers I'd just connect it to the 6Gbps ports. If its not a 6Gbps drive, it will just operate at 3Gbps (the ports are fully backwards compatible). That being said, I highly doubt you'll see any real difference in performance at all.

The only time you really have to worry about SATA interface speeds are with large RAID arrays or new fast SSD's.
