Anyone pick this up and try it? i was just about to buy it but the user reviews (over at subsim.com) have really been putting it down

i loved SH3 and even SH4, the inside the ship view to me was sounding like a great option.

I want it very badly, but wont be buying it till the DRM is gone or at the very least has an offline mode.

This. Is that why the reviews are putting it down though? Guess I can go check instead of being lazy about it.

Thats right this is one of the new games that you have to be connected the entire time you play.

I haven't played much SH4, but it was way too simmy. If you don't use fast forward you would sit infront of your computer screen for literally a week before you get some action, lol.

You'd think Ubisoft would've learned not to put crap-tastic DRM in their games after the StarForce debacle. I'd have been all over this, but they lost on a sale because of it - I'm frequently on the road and might not have an internet connection all the time - I don't mind a one-time activation, but this junk went way too far.

It sucks form what I can tell for the litle I played it today. 1. You have to walk around the sub to do any thing and the controls for moving suck. 2 when you get hit you eather take no damge or you die in one hit form what I can tell I had 1% flooding and the game just ends. 3 so far I can only seam to trun the ruder veary litle or all the way.

It looked good, and I wanted it - bought every other title in the series. But it's always BEEN a single-player series. I do a lot of business travel, much of the time with no net connection possible (hellloooo, flyover states!), which might be why I got so much into single-player sims to start with.

So this new DRM mess is a complete non-starter. I just can't play the game if I WANTED to, which is a damn shame, as I am a huge fan of the series (heck, even bought SH3 *and* SH4 twice each, once pre-ordered via B&M retail, then again when they came out on Steam).

Some guy on the Subsim forums, I think during SH3, actually played in real time.. He would update the forum on occasion. His stories were like.. "It was 4am and I heard someone shout enemy boat spotted so I jumped out of bed". I think he was a postman in New Zealand or something.

I believe the consensus over at SubSim is that they added some nice features but neutered the core interface and mechanics.

As thax stated, you can either turn the rudder one degree or the max of 35. There is no compass in the interface at all. Ubi seemed to have decided that you should only navigate by looking in a direction and hitting a button or by nav points on the map. Supposedly there are also bugs in the game that were originally identified in SH3.

Ships can be fully engulfed in fire and yet stay afloat indefinitely. Health bars? Really?

One sub class only. The Type VII with A, B, and C variants. No Types II or IX. Campaign only goes to 1943.

Not all is doom and gloom. The graphics are much improved. There was one feature mentioned that I believe any such game should have. Hit the F1 key and a keymap pops up on screen. Hold the shift key and the display changes to show you the functions for that mode.

All things considered, I will wait for modders to get a hold of this one and for Ubi to realize their DRM is not worth the hassle.

yea, as sad and as hard as it will be , i've decided to hold off on it..

i really hope they do right by it, i love SH3 and even SH4 so i'll just stick with those for now.

that is too bad but i understand, the sim style games seem to do this. Arma (I and II) were like t his, the initial releases where a little dodgey but the big difference being that they tend to be much more supported over the life span of the game.

hopefully SH5 will get a little more attention then i'll jump on board.

I'm a big fan of SH4, and was looking forward to this title. Unfortunately I won't be buying until the DRM is removed. its really a shame.

Love the series but ubisoft and their games will no longer get my attention and money due to their drm

Highlights: Too bad UBI is adding this type of DRM to their games now, I've always enjoyed the SH series and will unfortunately be unable to purchase this one until a crack comes out that allows you to play offline.

/start rant:

I love some of the absurd banter on Amazon. "As disappointing as the DRM is, you are correct, it's way overblown. We've had ten years of MMO's which inherently require you to be online, I think the PC community should be ready for something like this by now. I feel sorry for some of those who simply don't have online gaming rigs, but I strongly feel this issue is not that big of a deal for the vast majority of gamers."

As I replied in Amazon... MMO's require you to be online because they are MMO's. Massively Multiplayer ONLINE games. Games like SH or any other game with single player components should not require an internet connection.

I'm a service member stationed in Afghanistan who was about to buy this game until I read about the DRM... UBISOFT has been incorporating this DRM across a multitude of their games and it's getting rather annoying at this point... there are places in the world that you just can't get a steady internet connection. If you can even get a connection at all! (I can't outside of work).

They (UBI) claim that their loss of sales is due to Piracy... well people wouldn't be turning to piracy if such ridiculous implementations of DRM were not put in place. Even with this type of DRM, these games STILL get pirated... there is ALWAYS a way to beat DRM. As stated more times than I can count on numerous forums, it prevents paying customers from enjoying the game and by extension forces customers to find alternate means to play the game. I for one, will have to wait for a crack to come out to purchase this game. Sigh.
/end rant

Got the game when it came out. It has a few bugs - But nothing game breaking. It's also missing a few things that really make you scratch your head. The main one being depth under keel. You have to go into the config.ini and manually map the key. Other then that, i've been vastly enjoying the game.

Key points -

The new campaign setup rocks. It's more dynamic then 3/4, and it also has -real- goals that need to be accomplished. (If you want to progress to the next set of goals / campaign.)

Graphics are amazing, and being able to walk around on the sub really adds a whole new layer of immersion.

New features like the morale system also add to the immersion. There are also a plethora of new special abilites that your crew members can use. Some are passive, and some are active. It depends on how you 'upgrade' them. There are a plethora of upgrade options for the sub now as well.

The physics are much, much better now. Ships can now crack at the points of extreme damage. Things go flying everywhere. Etc..

You can now always have the map up in what is basically a seperate window on the GUI. This is a huge improvement over the prior versions where the map could only be viewed and manipulated with tools after going full screen with it. Now you can plot information out while looking through the periscope at the same time, or doing anything else for that matter.

It's a great game. Once they nail out a few of the minor bugs there won't be any complaints besides the DRM issue. Which for me, has not been an issue yet.
