Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

Yep – I’m a grad student, and this is my office. Please don’t laugh – I know the furniture is tacky (expect for the Aeron chair I brought in), but the power is free.

LCD Set Up #1: My main set up is a Tablet PC hooked up to a Dell 1907FP. I would love a 2407 – but I’m waiting for a sub 700$ deal and to see if all the issues have been taken care of.

This is my typical view with it. God I love extended desktop… works great for reading PDF’s on the Tablet PC and then moving stuff over to a word document. Today, I’m working on some code.

LCD Set Up #2: This is the school computer – was hooked up to a 15 inch CRT that Fred Flintstone likely used. I stashed that one away and put in another 1907FP. This is where my roomie sits, but they never keep long office hours (more time for me). The computer SUCKS, at one point I had a sign calling it the suggestion box, since you would “suggest” for it to open files and it would take your request under advisement for 5 minutes. Put in a stick of memory from my old computer and it is now adequate.

Here it is in ‘study mode’, the keyboard tucked away and the LCD swung away.

LCD Set Up #3: Here are more LCD’s, not sure if this is a ‘set up’. There is an LCD on the printer, two on the DS, one on the ipod and one on the PSP.

So what kind of arms are those on the displays?

Kensington.

Funny story: I got the first one 2.5 years ago for 60$. After one year it began to droop. I called the company and they sent me a new one 2nd day air. When I was removing the old one, I found that all that had to be done was to tighten a bolt, and it was fixed. I called them and they said to just keep it.

So... they cost me 30$ each.

They are OK, for the price, but the Ergo ones I've seen are much better.

Where did this background come from? For that matter, anyone have links to high quality babe backgrounds like shown above?

I asked for it a little earlier but no reply yet. Hope somebody knows cause I want it.

Deal of the century. (we all love deals).

I'm actually keen on your academics than your setup. It looked interesting enough to pique my curiosity to ask this, so what is it you're analyzing. All the sound waves looks interestingly cryptic.

looks like human genome to me. with all thoe a, t, c and g. each one stands for onr amino acid.

The picture is a program that analyzes data from a DNA sequencer and converts it into the A T G and C code most of us are familiar with.

There are several ways of doing DNA sequencing, the way I do mine is by integrating florescent tags into DNA strands, a different one for each of the four bases, and then run them on a system that will tell me the size (actually it’s the time, but this is converted into size). So, for example, if the laser detects the florescent tag corresponding to Cytosine (C) on a fragment that is 453 bases long, then at position 453, there is a C.

.

One thing the analysis does is to normalize the signal – which is what the wavy sine like waves looks like. The peaks are the predominant tag color (for want of a better term) at a particular time/fragment length. When the information comes off raw, the signal strength will vary, where the stronger signal is see with the shorter fragments and the weaker one with the longer fragments.

This works great for most of the data you get, but toward the end of a run (about the 500 – 800 base region), your data gets of lesser quality. What I’m doing in the picture is going in and changing the analysis settings trying to ‘rescue’ some of that data, while keeping a stringency level that is still defendable.

After I have this for several overlapping fragment sequences, I can then assemble them into a complete gene. Since its on my laptop, I can go to any hotspot – either school or business, and search the database with the information.

I love having it on my laptop in my office, because I typically do 8 to 16 runs, so there is some work to getting this all done. I

Actually, each one is a DNA base. Three bases form a codon, which will match to an amino acid, in many cases. There are codons that do not match to any amino acids, which is why I say "in many cases".

uhh, holy shit! this is hot, nice job, very original too :D wouldn't it be cool to have that as a single seamless flat panel  maybe some day :p

Is there a reliable way to remove the bezels in between each screen and do that mod?

There are also start and stop codons and the codons with non matching amino acid sequences could be important for site recognition sites for DNA binding protein for regulatory control. By your name I assume you are handeling DNA from gram positive bacteria from the genus Bacillus? Bacillus ...compact genome..., Me.. a graduate student also, currently handling Saccharomyces genome

this is post your workstation, not biology review :). And that triple display is sweet, how big is each panel though looks like 17" to me although i suppose they could be smaller? maybe 15" judging in reference to the keyboard

It looks like the bezels are still there. Just looks like they've been mounted up nicely.

Yeah, and I asked if it was possible to do that mod after removing all of the bezels.

Yes, Google for a disassembly guide to your monitor or just go really slow.

Actually, just found his worklog thread. If you look here you can see how he did it. He actually removed them from the bezels but put them back in. Shame, would have looked better without the bezels but still damn nice.

but a simple robot arm can easy merge 3 x 15" side by side, so I don't get the logic of that exercise

The outer plastic bezels were removed, what is left is the silver metal frame holding the panel, filter, diffuser and backlight together. The metal frame was then painted black.

thank you for claring that up :)

So it wouldn't be possible for those three panels to be put together in a borderless fashion...?

I don't think you'll get completely boarderless but I believe he could have done a little more to make there be way less than there is now.

hey do you have any pix of your setup? I think i've seen it before but I gotta see those dual 30" screens together ^_^

There are some pics of when I had the 3 of them in the big Jacuzz1 thread about the 3007 and should be in here somewhere as well. When I get a chance, I'll get some more pics up for you.

Edit: Found the pics of the 3 of them

Here is my setup... The main screens are the Dell 2405s... I apologize in advance for the not so great picture quality... don't have the best camera...

My Original Setup...

And now New and Improved...

As always Thoughts/Comments Welcome,

That desk must have cost alot... real wood!! (or it looks like it).

Why don't you wallmount the rear speakers to the wall behind you and get a good surround sound setup though? It only takes a few minutes...

Yeah I love my desk, It's definately real wood... it was custom made a store called Walter E Smithe,

As far as the speakers go... I just didn't want wires running accross the room, but as soon as I can figure out a viable cable management technique they'll be on that wall.

You must be a daytrader! Are you doing that fulltime?

Yeah I am a trader... but for some reason the term Day Trader just doesn't work for me. First of all I trade at night and during the day. second of all... I just prefer the term trader. :)

and Yes I do this fulltime, my old system just wasn't cutting it... check out http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1054544&page=1&pp=20&highlight=shhhh

I feel bad for the daytrader when the economy collapses because of the New World Order

On contraire, there is always much more money made on the falling market than a rising market.
