Should I wait for Vista?

First off let me state that I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to hardware. Its been two years since I did a system upgrade. Insanely long time for me, but life doesn't always give you options. Now I'm getting ready for a system upgrade and the question I want to ask is should I wait for Vista and directx 10? Will there be new directx 10 video cards and is it worth waiting for them? Thanks for any input you can provide.

no reason to wait for Vista... some of your current favorite software/games may not even work on this OS. You can always dual-boot with Windows Vista later.

I would suggest waiting because of the DX10 cards and because RAM is extremely expensive right now. The 2GBs of RAM I purchased were $157 after rebate... the SAME two sticks of RAM with an identical rebate now cost $245.00 after rebate.

$88 difference within just 3 weeks!

The exact perfect time to have purchased a system was right when Intel released their new CPUs... because the AMD CPUs dropped in price and RAM was still a good purchase.

As pricey as Vista will be, and the fact that there will be issues with it I'd have to concur with NTJedi and say no. As far as DX10 is concerned, that remains to be seen. I wouldn't worry too much about the vid card until more info is available. What OS are you currently running?

That all depends on how long you can wait, hehe. If you need a new system now, then go ahead and build one. Vista should work on it fine, provided you get some good advice on parts from the community. Though, I wouldnt recommend upgrading to it unless you have to. I'd wait til the first service pack is out, hehe. As for DX10, you could always buy a cheap card now and upgrade later, especially since it should take a while before games actually utilize DX10.

I had friends that told me to build a new computer after DX10 and Vista comes out. However as with new software launches theres bound to be glitches and problems so its better to take a wait and see approach with Vista. As the others have said, if you need a computer now go ahead and build one. No matter the hardware, Vista should run on it.

I plan to wait and stack up my money so when vista is about set to launch I will then begin to buy everything. I'm doing the same with all the software I would like to own, I will wait untill they make one to run on vista before buying. I wouldn't want to spend the money and spend more to upgrade so i can use it on vista. Windows XP I will keep so i can run all my games on. So I just say wait now. You wouldn't want to buy the parts now only to find out that when vista is about to come out that a new feature is added to say a motherboard, ram or Hard Drive that you brought months ago............

There is one item of concern. Because of Microsoft's getting into bed with the media companies, you must have a Video Card and Monitor both that support HDCP (Hard Disk Copy Protection) if you ever want to be able to watch HD movies at full resolution.

I know monitors are easy to get with HDCP (but you always have to check), but video cards are more difficult right now.

Not sure if the latest nVidia or ATI's support it yet.

My opinion:

You don't need to wait for Vista. You can just upgrade to Vista later when it is released, as the upgrade license is cheaper than a full license. When that happens, however, I would just install Vista and get it over with. Don't mess with dual-boot or anything. Of course there will be a few programs that don't work. That's part of an OS upgrade. You might as well get used to it now, because eventually Microsoft will drop support of Windows XP. If you have vital programs that don't work, you'll need to upgrade those too. It's just part of an OS upgrade (which is the reason why Microsoft doesn't release them very often, and one of the reasons why they will be moving to a modular format after Vista). And it will have issues just like any first-gen product. Microsoft will quickly issue an updates (or, more accurately, about 25 updates) to fix these.

I would wait for DX10. It is important, and expensive to upgrade to later. And you'll also need HDCP, courtesy of people who copy (steal) DVDs to avoid paying. Make sure you buy an HDCP video card that supports DX10. There may be one out in October, but I think that's unlikely.

If you're interested in quad-core, waiting for DX10 will also give you the option of Kentfield (Intel) and 4x4 (AMD).

Also, prices for everything are very high right now due to component shortages, high demand caused by the recent CPU platform change, and excitement about the upcoming DirectX and Windows platform change. If you buy now, you wouldn't be getting a very good deal.

But once again, when Vista comes, just upgrade!
