Should I upgrade?

Currently running two 9500gt 1gb cards in sli on a 939 opty 180 with 4gb of ram at 1080p, none of my components are OCed, but I'm getting ready to put the whole thing under water.

What kind of gains would I see with a 700 series gpu? The money isn't a huge issue but do I need a whole new rig to make a high end gpu worthwhile?

I plan on staying at 1080p.

I think you're going to need a new PC as your current setup would limit the performance of a lot of mid to high-range GPUs out there.

If you haven't bought the water cooling equipment yet, don't and save that money for a new build. That's far far more beneficial for you than water-cooling a very outdated setup.

you really have to ask if you should upgrade? 9500gt sli and that outdated cpu cant even play most modern games smoothly and certainly not at 1080. watercooling that pc? you can't be serious. and a gtx780 would be lucky to have 20% of its potential realized with that cpu.

just wanted to know if I could run newer games at 1080 if I updated the vid card-- I run plenty of other stuff at 1080p. Watercooling is fun! why not? It only costs about 250 for the parts.

I'll take your scorn for the old school rig to mean that I should not bother throwing some new vid cards in the mix. I simply figured that for pure gaming I could get away without a whole new setup if I threw some more gpu power in the mix.

It is fun but when you can use that $250 for a new CPU, mobo, and RAM that'll provide a far far greater increase in gaming performance, I don't see the reason for Watercooling unless it's part of a seperate budget altogether and you can easily afford a new CPU, mobo, and RAM upgrade.

You would see improvement in gaming performance with a newer card but you may not get the full power of the new card due to your current CPU. Depending on the card of course. At most, I'd probably recommend the HD 7770. Maybe the GTX 650 Ti Boost 1GB. But even then that's cutting it close.

9500gt is not even as fast as a single 9600gt so you are not running remotely modern games at 1080. and that cpu will not even deliver a playable experience in most games no matter what gpu that add.

IMO you really need some help picking out modern parts for completely new build because you don't seem in touch with computer hardware. at least not in regards to gaming.

that cpu is not even going to meet minimum requirements for modern games though so no real point in a faster card.

+1.

Not sure if the OP is just messing around or not.

No way I would spend any money on a system that old, unless you don't need the $$$ and would rather throw it away.

In regards to gaming? I wouldn't even use that to surf the net. :D

you are the one not making any sense here. you start a thread asking if you should upgrade? well of course you should and you know that if you are trying to play modern games.

then you talk about watercooling which would indicate that you are perhaps tech savvy which does not jive with anything else you are saying.

you then ask about putting a 780 with your old cpu which shows that you clearly have no understanding of hardware.

you say money is no object. well if that is true then why on earth are you still using that old computer in the first place?

so bottom line is this whole thread seems so far fetched that almost appears trollish. if not then I stand by what I said about you needing help picking out parts because you don't understand hardware at all.
