I built this computer 4 years ago, it has an asus crosshair 4, and phenom 1090t x6. i used to have a single 6970, but recently upgraded to 2 r9-290x's.

so im getting 100fps+ on 1440p since the major graphics card upgrade.

is it worth it to upgrade the motherboard and cpu? like would a crosshair 5 and 990x processor make a big difference?

i mean, i'm probably going to do it soon anyways, just not sure what type of performance effect this will have?

thanks

Assuming you're mostly just gaming on the machine, you could afford to wait for a new chipset from AMD before upgrading.

Isn't the single-threaded performance still equal to/greater on those 1090T compared to any new AMD cpu? If not, they're so close, it's not worth it IMO to upgrade. Also, consider than any new "8" core AMD, you will actually be losing 2 FP cores, so in some cases it could actually be a downgrade. Unless you plan to go LGA1150 to Haswell, I would stick with what you have.

Also, what clocks are you running on that 1090T? It may be more worthwhile to invest in better cooling, and overclock it/overclock more. As you said you are getting 100+FPS @ 1440p, what would really be the point?

Yeah not worth upgrading to another AMD platform in your case. Compared to current AMD CPUs, your 1090T can hold its own, especially once overclocked. If you have to upgrade to an AMD platform, wait until 2016 as that's when AMD's new desktop platform should come out and hope that it's actually good. If you want to upgrade the CPU and motherboard no matter what, you're looking at Intel in the form of a Core i7 4790K and a solid Z97 motherboard if buying within the month.
