So I've been relatively out of the loop with gaming. During college I went to PC gaming b/c it was a lot easier. Now that I'm graduated and have a career, I find that console games are more my thing now. I have a PS2, and I got a few games I wanted for it since I bought it (mainly Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII). Now that I want to get back into the Next Gen, I did some research and see that they are a few years old already, and that a PS4 has been officially announced apparently.

I'm not terribly into First Person Shooters, and that seems to be a bulk of X-Box 360 games (especially with that online feature). I don't know jack-squat about PS3. And my girlfriend has a Wii and it's alright. Zelda looks sweet, as do a few other titles, but for the most part it's lacking good games.

With all that said, do you think it would behoove me to just wait for the next next generation and hope that Sony's next system is backwards compatible with PS3 (and maybe PS2 and PSX)?
 
The PS4 has been officially announced? Really? Ummm... I'm thinking, no. If I recall correctly, Sony was planning the PS3 to last them 10 years (much like the PS2). At any rate, I wouldn't expect a new PS until at least 2012.

As for right now, buy whatever console has the most games you're interested in. It's as simple as that really.

This. Go to gamerankings.com, check out the top 20 games on each platform and what they score. See what you like most.
 
There's no PS4. Sony's been pretty adamant that they want the shelf life of the PS3 to be the same as the PS2 if not longer. I'm not sure that'll happen, but I guarantee there won't be a PS4 in the next 3-4 years.
The 360 might see a revision at some point, but they've been pretty good about just updating the maching rather than hinting at an Xbox 3. With the system being able to do scaling up to 1080p, there really isn't a reason for them too, either.
If anything we might see a Nintendo system with some more horsepower sooner than the others. Fun factor aside, it looks dated now and I have to think it's not going to age well.
 
I read an article at home (in the office ATM) that said a PS4 is slated for a 2010 release, which is 2.5 years away if they wait til the holidaze. But it could have been a rumor, which I wouldn't doubt.

With that in mind, and the many nays on PS4, I'll probably research and see what's up and where.

Yeah. PS3. I want both really. Fable 2 is coming to the 360 but I doubt that is going to be worth it.

Look to your Craigslist for deals too. Sometimes they are cheap, sometimes they are delusional.
 
I got a PS3 a month ago and all I do is watch Bluray and play PS2/PS1 games on it.

PS3 and 360 have about the same amount of FPS...and the 360 has more RPGs (at least for the next couple of years). I really don't know how these misconceptions are still around.
 
Xbox 1 was shooters.
Xbox 360 has the most diverse game library this generation, surprisingly the most RPGs.
Wii = Gamecube+Wiimote + WiiSports + SMG + Zelda
PS3 = FF13+MSG4+Little Big Planet+Home
 
Yeah, I love RPGs. I'm a Final Fantasy fanatic. Zelda's not bad, never fell in love with that series like I did FF. Does PS3 have as good of an online community as XBox 360?

And Final Fantasy XIII is enough reason for me to just forget Microsoft and get PS3 :D

Doesn't 360 have some Final Fantasy games coming out for it though? Or am I imagining things.
 
I think there are some things coming out for the 360 but as far as I know FFXIII is a PS3 exclusive. As for the online community it is not as big or extensive as the 360 but it is improving all the time. Firmware updates are common and they also keep you up to date with the latest blue-ray updates as well. I personally like the PS3 for my own reasons. If you are looking to continue to play your old PS2 titles on your new console remember to buy an 80 gig version since the 40 gig model does not support PS2 backwards compatability.

FFXI is the only Final Fantasy game available for the 360. That said it does have some other decent JRPGs, like Lost Odyssey, and definitely more WRPGs if that's your thing. As for the question of whether or not you should wait, don't. You'll be waiting a very long time. No next gen consoles have been announced and it's unlikely that any will be released within the next 3 years at minimum.

Some people might point to the short lifecycle of the original Xbox as evidence that the 360 will see a similarly short life. This is unlikely. Microsoft cut the original Xbox short because they saw it necessary to their success to beat the PS3, a machine that had been out for 6 years already, to market. Presently the PS3 is only a year and a half old, the 360 two and a half years. Consoles have a typical lifecycle of 5-6 years with successful consoles seeing new games released well into their 7th year.

That said, if you're planning on buying a system I would at least wait until the end of the month. E3 is next week and we will likely see at least a few major announcements, including a likely price drop for the 360. You will be able to get a much clearer picture of which console is right for you after the expo is over with.
 
360 = 299.99$ on July 12th. Much cheaper and for good reason, you spend half you time without your console because it is at the service center because the dvd drive breaks or it RROD's. If it does come back to you, it is another broken 360 that will break again anywhere from two weeks to a year.

PS3 = 399.99$ no backwards compatibility. Blueray which won the format war. I have a $50.00 HDDVD player that is a glorified paper weight. MGS4 Half Movie, Half Game. Amazing!
FFXIII coming out within 6 months. No RROD, No dvd drive breaking.
Online community sux.

Loved the 360 till it died 5 times in 3 years. 3 times happening in the span of one month. Get youself a PS3 and never look back.

Partially true. They also cut the xbox lifetime short because of some rather stupid contracts they had in place with Intel and Nvidia. Basically they were never able to get the cost of the console down enough because of these contracts and even at the end were losing money on each one sold.

Your experience sucks... but everything I've seen points to this not being an issue with the new models.
 
PS3 will probably get a price cut next week thanks to the 360 price cut. Theres a rumor that they are going to release a new model but I wouldnt expect something like that until fall.

I think you already know what youre going to get: PS3. FF13 is a PS3 exclusive, and the other FF13 game will be exclusive.

Other than Square games, Bioware RPG's I think are the only other RPG's worth playing these days, and those are always 360/PC only. They make western RPG's though, you may or may not like them since they are more realistic and technical, they are always polished and high quality though. The 360's other JRPG's have very mixed reviews, some people like them, some hate them, I would be wary of them.

You will probably enjoy Sony's first and second party games more, they always have a japanese flair about them. Little Big Planet is going to create shock and awe. Team ICO is working on something but they havent released anything other than an obscure shot of a chain coming out of a hole, their games manage to transcend from game to interactive art.
 
can i be the first to say HELL YES WAIT!!!!! if there isn't a game that you're dying to play, friggin wait.

you don't have to wait until a ps15 or the next xbox comes out, just wait until you really want to play something. when that happens, buy the console that's the best deal/most games you want/etc.

if you have other things to do than play video games, do it. once you drop 600 on a console+games+accessories, you might feel obligated to play them
 
Good points all around.

That's sort of what my thought process was Dome, nothing is jumping out to me. Since I've been out the loop for a while, most new games are lost on me. I have my little Nintendo DS occupying me, as well as friggin Final Fantasy 8 (I will beat this game one day). I do a lot of stuff besides game, I'm probably more of a casual gamer who's bordering enthusiastic soon.

I won't be buying a console til Christmas time anyway; student loans are a pure pain in my nutsack.

But the feedback has been good from everyone, and I appreciate it very much.

save the anxiety and just buy them both now...dont buy any games for either one though since you dont want to play anything but buy them both anyway, then you wont have to wonder if you missed out :)
