Should a coposite "video" cable work for digital audio?

i bought a nice set of RCA composite cables (2 audio + 1 video cable). I tried to use the video cable for transmitting digital audio over coaxial but nothing plays through it. is the cable messed up, or can these video cables not be used for this purpose?
 
it seems to work fine with video but not with sound, whats the deal :(
 
i always thought digital coaxial used 75ohm cable, and that some rca video cable was only 50ohm?

Not enough copper?
 
The spec's suggest 75 ohms for each cable so it should be just fine if everything is set right.
 
I have used all kinds of cheap "crap" rca cables for digital cables when in a pinch.. what are you going from and to? pc ---> reciever? If so.. did you enable digital i/o?

i had some super thin generic radio shack cable connecting from coax on HDA to receiver and it worked fine. i simply replaced it with this much sturdier RCA brand cable and no sound.
