Shopping for HD595

Lowest price I could find:

HD595

This is much cheaper than most places which are around $200 - $235. Am I missing something? Could these be the old 120 ohm instead of the new 50? I always get nervous when I see things priced low (and seem like a good deal). What do you guys think?

Which Grado? in the same price range? Amp required? etc?

Grado>Senn doesn't really help. 1,000 people will tell you Senn, 1,000 will tell you Grado, 1,000 will tell you DTT770, etc.

In any case, the original question stands.

A major aspect of headphones you want to look at is the sound stage...that is if you're going to be playing games with these headphones. A better soundstage will often times help you determine the direction of an enemy in games like CS:S and Quake 4.

While Grados shine for listening to rock music (just got a pair of MS-1s!), they absolutely blow for gaming imo.

I recently got into high end headphones and Sennheisers have been my brand of choice. My first pair were the 595s, and trust me you wont regret buying them. If you plan on wearing them for extended periods of time I don't think there is any better in the price range for comfort.

Here are a couple reviews to compare the Grado vs. Senns in the soundstage department.

There are more reviews on that website you can scroll through, but those were two of the more evenly priced headphones. 225s being the best bang for your buck headphone in the Grado line.

Postscript: After getting these phones you definitely want to invest in a good amp (PM Mister X for a custom built one) and EMU 0404 sound card for listening to music. That is unless you already have a decent setup.

I own a pair of 595s, I paid $190 for them a couple months back. I am running them unamped from onboard sound and they still sound great.

I took the plunge on these. I was charged roughly $15 for 2 day delivery and they've already shipped them (I just placed the order 2 hours ago). So definately a nice place to buy from.

I've been coming to the [H] for about 7-8 years now, but I hadn't really posted too often. I totally forgot my old user name and password, so... although it says I'm a newbie, I've been here forever (if only in spirit, not in post).

I've been reading through everyone's posts and on HeadFi.org for while now so it seems like these are what I would like best without getting a divorce ($$$).

I'll save up for an amp. I'm new to the whole headphone thing, I'm coming from a $20 set, so I am expecting a substantial increase in Sound Quality. I just bought all new components for my computer and I am putting it together over the holiday. I also got the X-fi soundcard, so I am hoping for good things. I'll post again after I get these headphones and give them a workout.

1 question though. Everyone says ask MisterX for amps. He must be very busy! What does he generally charge? I have to buy things generally under $200 to hide them from my wife Is that under his price range? I guess I should ask him that directly...
