I guess by applying the term "sociopath" to 70% of the population is how this joke of a profession keeps in business.

I personally love how "greatness" in psychology is measured by how long it takes to prove you wrong.

Oh, you mean the previous generations like those who are ruining out government right now and spitting on the constitution? Or maybe the previous generations who ruined the banking and automotive industries with their greed? Or did you mean the previous generations who are war profiteers and making a killing by prolonging that little war going on?

Oh, maybe you were referring to the previous generation who did the first experiment and had the same results, which was mentioned many times in this thread...

The experiment is a modern day version of the controversial experiment from back in the early 70s.

Pretty damning experiment the first time it was done, even moreso now that we've supposedly moved on (the first was done to try to explain how the people under Hitler could have commited such attrocities -- the answer, apparently, is that it's easy to torture people when you're 'just following orders').

Heck, I've heard of the original. I recall being surprised at the time that that many people were so... sheep like. I'm more cynical now.

actually the experiments are done with users who do not know in advance (well maybe not this one) but the original experiment was a controlled experiment. it was very sad!

That said, this experiment really doesn't surprise me. If someone is willing (ie, lab environment) to have me shock them, I'd do it repeatedly too

I must question the validity of this study. Many people know about (or even remember) the first experiment from the seventies. Therefore, I see only two possiblities:

1. These people were allowed to participate, in which case the study is invalid as many of its participants would have immediately realized they were being deceived.
2. These people were not allowed to participate, which would have biased the study against more culturally-literate people (the same people who are likely to put ethics above orders).
