which is the best way to have a computer shipped from cali to north carolina? my mom and grandma went to a local UPS store and they said it would cost 300 dollers!! to ship it. they said it included all boxing materials. but i think the price is just a little bit to much. which is the best way to ship a full computer system?

I assume that this will be a monitor as well.

You should be able to ship it for probably 35 - 40 per item.

$300 is pretty damn steep.

Maybe if you just dropped it off and they packed everything and used some furturistic foam or something.

maybe look for some packaging materials that dell (yes i said it) or another big company used to ship a computer.

I agree with the $30-40 for item. At my local pack and ship type place that is about what it cost to get an item adequately packed and shipped. I am in NC. This was from a local place, not the UPS store. They may gouge more for their margin.

If you are shipping a CRT, speakers with a sub, a mid-full tower, and the assorted peripherals you can expect around $150 or so assuming ground shipment and not being gouged on packing materials.

all the stuff iam going to have shipped is what Xeese said. well it isnt a UPS store its like a shipping place. i also have the option to have it shipped on the back of a truck coming from cali for free. but i take the chance something breaking cause it will be at the tail end of the trucks and everything bounce's on the tail end. im thinking about just having it upsed and if anything gets broken i can get it replaced cause of insurance. what other places are good to ship with like fedex?

The place I use ships through both UPS and Fedex. My guess is that they are gouging you on the packaging. Head to a mom&pop type computer store to get a box for the monitor and case - they can probably hook you up. If you can use some of the solid pieces of styrofoam around your system - that is a bonus.

To pack it yourself - put the system in a plastic bag (trash bag) so that you don't accidentally get tape or foam paeanuts in it. If you have solid styrofoam pices use those on the edges. If not, wrap everything at least 2 layers thick with the big bubble wrap (the 1.5-2" diameter bubbles). Put it in a box and fill any loose area with foam peanuts. If you have a heavy HSF on the video card or CPU, you may want to detach those and bubbble wrap/pack inside comp case and tape down or preferrably put in the box. You should be ok with doing bubble wrap for your peripherals with in the same box as the mid-tower. The less boxes you have = lower shipping cost.

I have never shipped a monitor without the original case so I can't help you there.

For the speakers - If you can sell them and buy new ones for maybe $60 more than what you sell your old ones for do that. No worries about shipping damage and cost comes out the same with the bonus of a new warranty.

A friend of mine used those styrofoam spray? A bitch to open up ... but it worked ...

I dont know about $300. I just shipped a pretty heavy Chiefen case and it only cost me $27 dollars. 300 maybe if you want same day delivery.

Some suggestions when packing: Double box--it helps. Also, remove any heavy heatsinks from cpu and vid card--you don't want these coming off and rattling around for 1500 miles.

I've shipped whole systems for about $70. 3 boxes.
1) speakers, keyboard, mouse, etc.
2) case.
3) Monitor.

thanks guys for all of your help guys. i was going to double box it. hell i mite make me some boxes at work. were constaly making boxes.

if you went to "The UPS store", they waaaaay over charge.. fuck that.

package it yourself -- use blocks of stryrofoam if you have it along with foam peanuts. needs 3inches of padding all the way around...

really, find big blocks of styrofoam like your computer came in if you can... best way to package it. put it in a new really stable box. (maybe get one of those plastic storage bins at walmart for like 5$? make sure it's not to big though and make sure it fits in a normal box or UPS will charge extra).

as for your computer -- remove the heatsink...

and lastly... don't ship it at The UPS store... take it directly to the hub. it'll be alot cheaper. and GET IT INSURED! make sure there's 3 inches of padding or your insurance will be null and void cause it was improperly packed by UPS standards.

I had my system you see in my sig flown through baggage when I spent a week in Ohio :D . It was watercooled and all. I didn't unhook or do single thing except put it in a suitcase, put some towels all around it, and sent it on it's way. Surprisingly, the only thing that happened was my acrylic window popped in, that was it.
