What's up with having to reserve system memory to use with system devices. I have a 1Gb video card so about 1 Gb of my system memory is taken by the OS to shadow my video card's memory. With additional PCIe devices I think it is higher (raid controllers etc). I.E Win7 shows 6144 installed, but only 4500 available. I don't think Win 7 needs 1.5 Gb just to idle after boot.
And to explain I have a SSD so have superfetch disabled.
I have search around and cannot find any decent info for the following questions.
-I understand why low end video cards with hardly any on-board memory use shared / turbo memory. But why do cards with a decent amount of like mine need to have this?
-What is all this system memory used for?
-Why does it need to be statically reserved, why can't it be assigned dynamicaly like it is for programs.
-Does it need to match the memory on devices. I.e if I have 2 Xfires / SLI cards with 1GB each does that mean 1 or 2 GB of shared memory reserved.
The reason I ask all this is that new video cards hitting the market with 1.5 to 2 GB of on-board memory. Once you Xfire / SLI them that could be 4Gb (just for the video cards) of your system memory reserved for as far as I can tell no reason.
Can anyone provide some clarity on this?
