I decided it was time for a home server and after a bit of research it seemed the sg05 and gigabyte mini itx were definitely the way to go

the board, it totally rocks, some gunk came off with the usb 3.0 sticker though, gayyy

heating up some ic diamond

it goes on so much easier that way

the cooler is as big as the board!

A few shots of the board in the case, the sugo is pretty roomy, especially stripped

Ill be using the integrated graphics on the chip but threw in an 8800gt for size reference

as you can see it just misses the cpu cooler

I measured from the end of the 8800gt to the bracket it it comes in at just about 9" which somehow matches up to the 8800gt reference length

Replaced front intake with a Scythe S-flex

And here it is in its new home, I have a 50" 3d on the way, that one is a 40" that will be going in the bedroom

All I need to do now is build some shelving to hide the mess and get some surround sound action

This board and case make for a super htpc and Id recommend it to anyone looking for a sff build

BTW... how noisey is the Scythe fan ontop of the Shuriken HS? I've been looking for a slim 120mm fan.

than fan isnt bad at all, it is pwm though, and when it cranks up its the loudest part of the build id guess ~20db. Id like to replace with a very low db gentle typhoon or s flex and its a 92mm not a 120mm.

Ahh what it wouldnt fit? I wanna see pics though it seems like it should barely squeeze in there, the gtx 200 series looks like it is a bit too long and though it has the same reference length the gtx 580s seems a bit more snub on the ends

I do run it at 7V in order to make it silent (as in roomie doesn't know it's on in the morning) in my SG05 build




Only a E7200 and a HD4350 in there, though

Wanted to put in a GTS250, though the XFX Core edition fan was way too noisey at idle.

Yeah, several months ago, there were rumors and spec sheets listing the GT series as discontinued, and NewEgg had a tough time keeping them in stock, though they seem to be finally getting a few shipments, now...

Looks nice. I want one of these cases for my brother. It'll happen sometime. I have the 120mm pwm version of that slim fan but I replaced it with a s-flex 800 rpm. If only that GT of yours was the 500rpm variant :/

Okay... just a general question, why the 500rpm variant? Couldn't one just undervolt the 1850RPM fan to 5V to make it silent? Isn't it better to have a higher max RPM for "just in case" scenarios since you can undervolt, but not overvolt? Maybe I am just ignorantly grasping at straws I'm not trying to convince you to trade me your fans anymore, so don't fear that

personally I like my builds very quiet, and never have I needed higher rpm fans. Yes undervolting a fan does give much more headroom and higher rpm potential, but then you have to use a resistor, which can (devils advocate) very rarely cause problems due to the change in current and resistor quality, and you have to buy it and put it somewhere in the case, also in some cases the fans arent meant to be run at lower voltage and it can cause problems with the motor. I think in scythes cases it is negligible since they are all essentially the same fan but with internal resistors to lower the current, so you would just be placing one externally, but since I value silence over anything else, it just doesnt seem worth it

cj3waker pretty much answered your question for me. As you can see in my signature, my computer isn't some crazy gaming computer. It's rather basic and just like cj3waker, I prefer silence. I replaced the stock front 140mm fan with a UCTB14 only to replace it later with a NB-PK1 (700 rpm, "9 dba"). Sadly, it's still a little too loud for me as my computer sits less than two feet away on my right. Maybe it's because of the small side vents on the side where the front fan takes in air. Either way, I'll probably have to buy the Zalman fan mate 2 or something to quiet it down to 5V. As for the 500rpm GT, if I did get a hold of one, I would try it out on the Big Shuriken to see if there's much of a difference between that and the 800rpm s-flex. The noise is probably just coming from the Noise Blocker though.

Yeah it definitely pushes more air while being quiet. It's funny that you mention pushing air down on it. I've always had it pushing air down. I thought that's how it was supposed to be

i think it is supposed to exhaust air up off the cooler in a pull config, I could be wrong
but basically

Ah I see. Maybe I'll get around to it some other time. The temperatures are perfectly fine pushing down. Also at the moment, my PSU isn't facing the CPU HSF which would help pull the air through the PSU fan and out its exhaust.

well I have sold off most of my current rig and depending on sandy bridge price/performance i am going to build another itx for my main gaming rig. In the mean time i have made a few purchases that should beef up my htpc to hold me over

SG-05b 450 - the same case as my current but its all black and has a 450w psu. I will be putting my htpc in this for the time being. and then when i buy new hardware for my main rig it will go in here and the htpc will be back in the old sg 05

EVGA GTX 570 - My ati adventure from the last year wasnt the greatest and im hoping coming back to nvidia will brighten my horizons

Intel x-25v - got a nice price on a 40gb drive that I will use for boot and apps

and on the lower end I found a 92x25mm scythe gentle typhoon for my shuriken cpu cooler. put in a downward config the high static pressure should help cool the shuriken fins a lot more and blow air over the rest of the board. better than my stock slim pwm fan on the shuriken anyway
