I'm going off to college in the fall, and I'd really like to get a SN25P, but since it's rather expensive, my parents would want me to get some sort of security device, be it some sort of lock cable device or the like, to make sure no one hops off with it. Any suggestions or advice?

(Oh, just as an adjoiner, what about monitor security? Not a CRT)
 
are you going to be in an apartment? you could always bolt it to the desk or somthing.
 
There are aftermarket bolt attachers for shuttles, google around youll find it, basicly you drill a hole in said desk and it locks there with key

As for your screen, my 17inch crt (with subwoofer/2 speakers) weighs around 80-90lbs, i dont think someone would want to steal something that weighs that much, speicaly as big as it is............

in other words, get a big ass heavy CRT screen ;)

Can't drill, living in a dorm. Everything's gotta be in pristine condition when I leave.
 
hrumm, i say just lock it, and make it look as ugly as you can, dent it up, or get those bullet hole stickers or something :p or hide it so no one can see it if they are hanging out your doorway, remember, ugly things dont get stolen for a reason :D
i myself would use a laptop if i were in college, id keep it on me at all times, and when i go to sleep, id put a bell on top of it, the odds of someone picking up a bell while im alseep and not rinning it.........well id wake up :p

I just got finished building my college pc, and I was also thinking about the same thing. I have an Aspire X-QPack, and what I am going to do is go get a security device like something you would see on a laptop, drill a hole in the case, and wrap it around the leg of the desk or something. And if I can't find any security devices that work.. I will go get a bike anti-theft chain :p
 
you could always get a cheap filing cabinet with the lock and stuff it in there. and just drill a hole in the back for cables?
 
Put it in a cardboard box they use for animal transport, write ferrets somewhere on it and while away have a tape recording of ferret sounds playing.

Yeah... but my parents are paranoid about the warranty, and that would probably void it all to hell... So, that's not going to help either. Is there no security device place on the case?
 
Shuttle has so wonderfull bags... Just take your SFF everywhere you go to :).

You could pull a thin cable through the screw hole that normally close the case and than sling the cable arround a heating radiator or some other tubing on the wall.

Tell your parents to be less paranoid. Anything that you lock down is going to require some sort of voiding of warranties. Beside, it only would void the warranty of the case.

As for the monitor... CRTs don't stop thieves, but they are less likely to get lifted. I lived in a fraternity where people could come and go w/o asking, basically no locks on the doors during the day and stuff would get stolen all the time... even CRTs. My suggestion would be to get an LCD with a circular base, and run a lock around it and the desk leg. Most of the Dells have this and an Acer 1731 would be perfect for your situation. One of the last LCDs with a fast response time & 24-bit color, plus it has a handle so it's real easy to move around. Downside is the external AC adapter...
 
Well if you case, mainboard and PSU are one unit. So its 400$ of waranty that are void if you change something on your SN25P.



Dont know how you take it in the US in fraternities: But in a fraternity nothing should even have to remote chance of being stolen.

$360. ;) ...and Shuttle would probably honor the rest of your warranty if anything goes bad - just send them the part. Cases don't go bad.

When you live in the middle of the ghetto of LA and you don't know whether that random stranger in your house is a friend or not, it's hard to know who to say "Get the @#$% out of my house." Plus, we have seen some wiley crackheads... ...and believe it or not, not everyone is honest, even at the university level.



Okay, I got an idea that will give you just enough security...


What you do is take a luggage lock and one of those thin, high density bike locks. Wrap the luggage lock through one of the fan grilles and string the bike lock through the rest of the loop in the luggage lock. Then you wrap the rest of it around the corner of your desk or something else that is not going anywhere! Before anyone negative chimes in about a fan getting in the way - all you have to do is remove one of the fans. You may not even need to.

Sure it's not going to stop a determined thief, but nothing will. It's a safe bet that they will not have heavy duty wire cutters when they are wandering through a dorm trying to steal stuff, they are more likely to lift something easy. With enough force anyone could break your "security system", but not without some noise. A lock coming off the back may be enough to deter them as it is.
 
Well, what about that little hole between where the cards would go, down at the bottom of that picture? Is that big enough to use a laptop lock on? I've been looking at that hole and wondering if that would work. If not, I could get my step dad to cut a slot just big enough for a laptop lock to work anyways. (maybe, I don't know.) If push comes to shove, I'm going to call up Shuttle on Tuesday and see what they recommend.

However, if you don't use the PCI slot, you can pull out the bracket and wrap it around the top of the PCI bar. That's the easiest solution. I didn't suggest it, because that's not something most people would want to limit themselves to... If you want a soundcard that doesn't suck in games or a TV tuner card so your PC can double as a TV, you are going to have to start looking at this again.

Another idea would be to have like a figure 8 washer, where one loop fits snuggle under a screw and another is large enough to run a lock through. You could then take a glue gun and seal over the screw. I can't say I have seen a part exactly like that, but there might be something like that you could find at Lowes/Home Depot. That's probably worse than my last suggestion, but just throwing out ideas here.

Well, it's still a good idea, and since its a PCIe x1 slot and there aren't many cards that use that yet, I might do that. However, I decided to email Shuttle today anyways. I'll post what they write (if they write back).

Definitely like the washer idea a lot. Plus, I'm going to ask the guy who handles computer security and the like at work what he would suggest and what they use. Because they actually had to order new lock things for the desktops that we use around at the school.

If your not using a dual slot cooling solution you could take a plain slot cover, but two holes in it, thread a bike cable, and tada... do something to that effect?
 
just a thought but for rma/warranty issues replacing the cover is cheap, therefore do something to that... but be creative and lock it down somehow, regardless of the rebuttle. make it look cheap, HIDE it, but always remember to keep it hush hush. as with anything, its word of mouth that gets people interested ;)
 
some shuttles have tab on the back that works with laptop cable-locks. there are also several 3rd party case locking systems the make use of a thumb screw hole so they will work for just about any case. google pc case locks
maybe this is what youre looking for.
 
I had a simple solution for my computer at school. it weighed in at close to 80lbs alone. (gota love the Antec for making them steel) had 4 harddrives, 2 burners, water cooling and. loaded with add ins. thing was a bastard.

Actually, that's exactly what I was looking for. However, I just got a call back from Shuttle, and they do not offer any locking solutions. I was wondering, anyone with a SN25P, can you measure how big that slot is in the back between the PCI slots are? I want to see if it would be compatible with one of those case locks or a laptop lock.
 
What university? UCLA?? Heh, that's where I'll be attending this fall.

I'm hoping to build a SFF using the Aspire XQ pack and a miniatx ati xpress 200 chipset mobo.
 
the setup i linked replaces a case screw. no other tabs needed.

Lock your door?

I don't mean to be sarcastic, but my door was always locked unless I was in the room or close vicinity (ie down the hall). Odd's are you won't have to deal with people breaking and entering, and I'm assuming you can trust your roommate. I have an SFF and an LCD, I didn't have locks for either one because my door was always locked.

Well, honestly, I don't know who my room mate is, and unfortunately, I'm stuck in the freshman dorm, so who knows how immature (or mature) my roommate might be. Your point is well noted though.

I'm still wondering about a laptop lock and that slot (or what looks to be a slot) between the two PCIe slots. Can't anyone who owns a laptop lock and a SN25P case tell me if it would even fit/work?
 
I suggest carrying a gun. Do they have CHL's where you are? I know they make some nice concealable 7 shot .45's (Para Ordinance I believe).

Now that my qpack is done, I'll be bring it to school because its for a project. I'll leave it in a teacher's classroom (he's the only teacher using that room, but has multiple classes) so I'll need to put some sort of security device on it while I'm not in the room or paying attention. Anyone got any suggestions? (I'm thinking of BIOS protecting it, and putting a lockable screw (if there's such a thing) but then I fear that its not enough.)

Passwording the BIOS is a smart move. I say don't bother w/ the Lock. If someone really wants the pc that bad, they can just take the PC and rip the lock off later.

Also Did you try your schools main office, I know ours has a vault, see if there is somewhere they will let you keep it.
 
yeah, find out if you can insure your possessions ...maybe renters insurance... or maybe your parents insurance will cover it.. that way if it gets stolen youll get an upgraded system ;)
