So I have a NAS in a tower case right now and hate its large size and wasted space.

I found this some time back:

This is exactly what I want to build and have found the necessary pieces for it, but not all of them for the price I want.

The only problem now is finding a reasonably priced: 5-bay hot-swap mobile S-ATA HDD rack

I have searched and searched (mostly last year right before Christmas :) ) but could not find anything i liked. I need SATA

Any information would be greatly appreciated, or more links about little NAS to build.

Sorry about not giving my price range, but $100 is somewhat reasonable but I could of sworn they where more then that when I searched last year... my bad.

The Athena Power BP 5-Bay Hot-Swap looks to be the best one.

Yeah the Athena one is the better choice, at least from what I can tell from my readings in the Disk Storage subforum.

Oh and thank you for showing Project Udat. I was thinking of doing something similar but as an external drive, rather than a NAS
 
I have a dedicated box right now in a tower case, but as stated before just want to upgrade to something better and less space. Also I don't need it to be a dedicated box it was just the cheapest way when i built it 3-4 years ago.

Sepron64 CPU with a PNY RAID Card (not the best but it is was the best price for a driverless card I could find)

Taking a more serious look now I did find this:
Thecus N3200 at Newegg for $340.99
OR
Thecus N4100+ at Newegg for $389.99

The N4100 didn't get a great review, but I good not find any good review for either the N3200 or the N4100+
I guess I am googleing the wrong phrase? But now that Thecus's prices have dropped and new models out, I am also considering it instead of building one.
Plus I can get a nice web based GUI... Because I have a KVM switch right now to see the status of my current NAS, which I could maybe upgrade but don't know how (willing to learn though - I have installed custom mediaWikis so it couldn't be much harder?)

You might want to do a little searching around the Disk Storage forum. I do see threads asking for NAS recommendations from time to time. You might find something there.
 
If you're just building a Nas, you really don't need a full system.

I would look at multi-bay storage enclosures.

And look at network attach bridgeboards.

Or you can find cheaper SATA bridgeboards and then use an external sata-usb adaptor in combination with a router that takes usb storage...

There are many ways to do this cheap.
 
I was looking for more of a all in one NAS. This is just my personal preference on this.

I want just a Ethernet and Power cord giong to my NAS - and don't want it any larger then my SilverStone SG02 :)
