what would you guys buy with 1200 bucks to spend? I want to build a SFF, case and everything. I plan on gaming and ripping cds/dvs.

Could you perhaps name any games you'd like to play? Do you need anything better than a 200 dollar Gateway to rip cds?
Given the information so far, I wouldnt reccomend building a computer at all but rather assembling a shuttle or buying a fragbox.

Sorry bout that. Id like to play FEAR, BFII, Quake 4. Ive built systems in the past but been out of the loop for a bit. Im still on a custom 9700 Pro system. Just have a budget I have to stay within and I would like the best components I can get for that price.

This setup will be around 1200 (you can always drop the raptor to give a little more leeway) but i wouldnt suggest getting the 165 unless your willing to overclock. Oh, and you will want a different PSU for the X Q-pack

Save some cash go with the 148, if you check the forums you should be able to get a pretty good overclocker 250 FSB ish for around $200. As much as dual core is in vogue at the moment, that will suit your needs pretty well.
I would recommend the TForce too, but my board seems to not like life about 230 FSB. But thats ok for me because I have an Opteron 150 and PC3200 so it kind of balances all out in the end.

If you're building a new system, no reason not to go for dual core nowadays. It is a huge boost in everyday usage and in games coming soon and a few available now. The overall system experience is much nicer, as well.

If you're going to overclock, the Opteron 165 is probably better idea (as everyone else already mentioned). I'm not sure if I'll do any overclocking, so I went with the 3800+. It was about $30 cheaper, and the faster default speed more than makes up for the smaller amount of cache. If I ever get the itch, it seems like the 3800+ OCs just fine, but it's definitely not as good as the 165 in this regard.

And I went with the SN25P over a QPack, mainly because I think the QPacks are too big. I've got an SN45G right now, and I don't want anything that's much bigger than that. The SN25P is about as close as I could get.
