SFF Case for mini-ITX GPU/MB

thanks for the suggestions Aibohphobia! I just spoke to my local corner mail shipping store and he said he could handle the whole shipment, with re-shipping costs including packaging and labor at 20-25$ per case assuming the cases do not come individually packaged and weigh about 5 pounds (i just guessed that number). seems reasonable to me. Now we just need an escrow service or something for payments... but let's see if we can get enough interest first. I'm trying to get Peter, the case designer on here. I forwarded the questions you guys had about temps and airflow as well as my own questions about what materials are used.

looks like they made a mistake with the price... the number I was quoted was for a quantity of 700 and without VAT... so looks like we'd be looking at more like 150$ :-/ Still fair considering the M1 goes for around 200 and this appears to be comparable quality. Personally i'm not a fan of huge power bricks and pci-risers in all these steam boxes and such, so for me this is the smallest and most powerful setup out there and i'd be willing to pay for it. Hopefully others agree! Peter signed up for the forums today and will be on and answering questions as soon as he is able to post.

150 ain't too bad. Big deal here is shipping. Should we have one shipment going to the US and another going to somewhere in the EU? Wouldn't want to have to ship from Europe to the US and back to Europe again...

I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem to ship out 2 batches, especially if we can get the numbers up. We just need someone in europe willing to handle the shipment. But we can figure that out once we have enough interest. M1 offered a lot more flexibility while this case is all about size... hope we can get enough people into that :-/ Maybe we can check out indiegogo like the M1? Are they able to refund in case things don't work out? Also wonder how many europe orders the M1 got...

Indiegogo has an option to run a Kickstarter-like campaign where if the goal isn't met everyone gets refunded.

I think Massdrop would be the best route for this. I haven't actually used it myself but how I understand it is you post something you think the community is interested in buying (like Osmi) and if it receives enough votes Massdrop contacts the manufacturer and works out a deal. They handle the payments and shipping.

yeah i buy a lot from Massdrop, they are great but the problem is they will want to make some profit, raising the price, and also they usually only post items for a few days (like 10 maximum) and if the numbers aren't raised in that time it's a no go. Since this is such a new item I think it needs some introduction to the community first before people will take the plunge... I already mentioned to the osmi guys that they should send out a few test units so people can make builds and post pics and so on to build interest and get that critical mass going for a group buy.

Agree! That Osmi is very nice and looks very tiny!

Just wondering, with the PSU mounted where it is, if there's much room left for CPU cooling.. and if the vented exterior and top exhaust makes for a dusty negative pressure case? Or if it could work as an intake?

Wow.. I saw the ODD, but just now noticed they crammed a 3.5" drive in there as well. So awesome!

EDIT:

Oops, didn't catch that. The L9 is a little too small for the 4770k they show in the config Rawrr posted. Really curious to know what the temps would be with that setup.

Ok, so this case seems close to meeting what I was asking. I was borderline wondering if I should go with microATX for a while. Plan is for a GTX 970 and i7-4790k, so if there were a better cooling option while not using the 3.5" drive space it might work for me.

I don't think leaving out the 3.5 drive will get any better coolers, seeing how it's off to the side of the motherboard.

That being said an L9i should be fine, as long as you don't do some heavy overclocking

Hi guys, its' Peter here. I designed and tested Osmi, so let me try to answer few of the questions I noticed here.

Material: It's full aluminium, assembled using countersunk M3 screws. (no rivets or welds).

Finish: Prototype you see on the pictures is hard anodized black, but production will be powder coated.

Temperatures: I tested it with 84W i5-4670K (with stock Intel cooler) and 170W GTX 760 MINI using prime95 and 3DMark. I cannot remember exact numbers for cpu, but it was no problem. GPU peaked 77C at 62rpm fand speed.

Noise: Under full load, to my personal standards not very good., that GPU was far from quiet . The problem in my opinion is this perforated 'skin' which even with filter behind it allows a lot of noise to escape. That is one of the reasons why I'm working on new revision with solid glossy white 'skin' and more air intake at the bottom of the case (there are some for gpu already, that is why Osmi stands on this small 'leg')

Cooling is negative pressure. I'm a fan of positive pressure and my first thoughts where positioning that 140mm fan at the bottom, but I soon realized it's just not gonna work. It's a compromise I had to make to achieve the size of the case, while keeping all the components I wanted.

Any more questions, fell free to ask.

Peter

Hi! First, thanks for taking the time to come over here and answer our questions!

Anyway, will an SFX-L psu fit if the 3.5 drive is left out?

It should, but I never tried it my self. I tested 450W sfx, but even better option would be new 600W sfx psu from Silverstone. its not only more powerfull, but flat na shorter cables, with tight space builds in mind.

I was just keeping in mind that the SFX PSUs are notorious for their fan noise, which SFX-L apparently alleviates.

I've got 350W sfx from BeQuiet and 450W from Silverstone and both are very quiet PSUs.

Welcome to the forum where even SPCR sometimes is criticized for being not strict enough on what is considered quiet ;)

But the noise issues with the ST45SF-G and even the new SX600-G are very real, after about a dozen or more similar complaints from people. Although the SX600-G seems to be better in regards to producing noise, it does seem to have it's own issues concerning a "chattery" fan and clicking sounds when it tries to start spinning.

It isn't said actually, it's hoped :) Anyone has yet to get their hands on the Silverstone SX500-LG, while the other variants like the Scythe and Chieftec have the OEM fan that looks very mediocre.

Are we going to get this plan started soon?

It seems like they are not ready yet. I asked to buy a test unit and offered to post pics etc. but it seems like they are still working on their website, a 2nd version, and so on. :-/

Ahh. Well at least things are happening.

Hi,

Things are most certainly happening, just a bit slower, specially at this time of the year.
I will have a couple of new Osmi cases ready in a couple of weeks, but those will be not available for sale only for internal hw tests, as they will not come from our manufacturer, will not have correct finish, etc.
If we where to sell just 1 Osmi case it would obviously have to be production sample. We can, of course, order any quantity from manufacturer, but there are two things to consider. First is lead time, which is 3-4 weeks and second is price. For example if we ordered 10 instead of 50, price would climb from 120 Eur, to 200 Eur @.
Unfortunately we are just starting production so we not able to simply add a couple to existing orders, and sell them to you at normal price.

Hey, thanks for the response. Good to see that you are doing tests on prototypes, nice and organized!

I know most of you guys are no fixed on Osmi, but I just found the Rosewill V6 / Jonsbo V6, which seems to be close to what was asked for in the OP.

It also has an interesting airflow concept where the PSU acts as the main intake for the board and draws in cool air from the front. There are also mounts for three 60mm fans in the front.

It's nice, but it's a bit big at 12.6L. That makes it about the same size as the M1, which, unlike this case, can fit a full size GPU. I think that makes the M1 a better option.

The PSU actually exhausts out through the front, which isn't particularly efficient considering the three 60mm intakes are right below. That will lead to some significant exhaust recycling.

I'd go so far as to say that the M1 can do a short GPU + ATX PSU better than the Jonsbo V6 as well, with support for longer PSUs and taller CPU coolers:

Though there are trade offs involved. In particular, it's not well suited to using 3.5" drives in this configuration.

Hm, I was too lazy to calculate volume based on the imperial measurements, but that is actually pretty large. You're right, in that case the M1 seems to be better. I just remembered this thread for asking about short GPUs specifically, but it doesn't seem like this case is as spatially efficient as I though it was.

Oh right, I somehow got the airflow backwards in my head. Ok, suggestion withdrawn, that case is actually not very great, except you REALLY want to fit 3,5" HDDs :D

Doesnt jonsbo have something for you then?
The v series or u series?
Or are they still a little big?

Well, the ones that fit GPUs are pretty big, and the ones that are small don't fit them.

Osmi seems to fit OP's needs well, and I guess most of us are waiting for that.

Hi guys, I finished testing Osmi mk2 a couple of days ago. Here are few pictures, so you have an idea how it looks with new skin.

Wow. This is pretty much the exact case I'm after for my new build. I don't need a GPU right now but would like the option to add one in the future, but I'd only need a mini one. So no need for a longer case to support the full length GPUs. Only need space for a single SSD. I'm sold.

That is probably the most successful stealth ODD implementation i have ever seen. I really like this one. If this is what it looks like when commercial case manufacturers catch on to proper SFF, then I am excited.

I saw this before, but the new skin is absolutely gorgeous! I really, really like the design, and the airflow concept is so different to all other implementations. Also the fact that it fits a 3.5" HDD and a ODD at the same time without compromising airflow is nothing but amazing.

The only drawback is the powerbutton on the back and the lack of USB-ports, but the latter is not a huge compromise to make for such a gorgeous design. Did you think about making your logo the power button?

This case will probably be very successful, I wish you the best in this niche market!

The area where the logo is is probably very congested for space, and you may not be able to fit a button amongst the gpu, psu, cpu cooler...

Yeah but the button could be moved up a little to clear the GPU, no? If it's blocked by the PSU, I totally understand not going for it, but a PC with a powerbutton at the back seems a little weird and impractical. Maybe that's just me though.
