I'm about to upgrade my desktop and what i've done int he past is use that leftover hardware to upgrade my server. Here's the problem.

My Server has 3 duties. Data storage, Occasional Garry's Mod or TF2 Server hosting and Occasional VM's all of which it does now with an E6600.

I want to be able to use AirVideo for realtime video conversion on the server side which is the only reason I am going to upgrade the hardware.

I have an i7 920, EVGA Mobo and 12GB of Ram to go into the server that is currently in my desktop that can do all of these duties just fine but I am worried about 24/7 power consumption.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a processor that will be able to perform the video conversion with possibly less power consumption? I've looked at A10's but read horrible things about there power use. Open to any suggestions.

Check out local isp:s. They might offer you rack space for next to nothing per month or even cheaper virtual machine to do this duty. That way you get to tap into the gigabit core network (with probably 10M connection) and without worrying about power consumption. Even Amazon could provide you with a small virtual machine for a few bucks that would let you run the services.
 
Why not go for the Core i7 3770K? Provides better performance and uses less power.
 
I want to keep the machine local as I stream hi-def content stored on it to several PC's around the house, local backup etc. The Air Video is just for streaming local content abroad and 2 apple tv's.

A i7 3770k is actually what is going into my new desktop build. Wouldn't be a bad idea but seems a bit overkill for what i'm doing.

I'm wondering if there are any i5's that can do the trick... or something else.

The Core i5 3470 should do the trick. Apparently it's faster than your current Core i7 920 in video encoding.
