i want to build a small server at home. just need some advice on which MB, cpu and etc to get. all advice is greatly appreciated.
 
Any combination of parts that are stable together :)

Most servers aren't overclocked :)
 
A regular old comp can act as a server if you have one lying around. I run a server off my 2nd comp (see the P4 1.3 in sig), my friend has run a server off his dual PII box.

If you're gonna build one, you're basically just building a regular computer, since I'm assuming this server will be doing light serving duties (file servers, light web server, etc.).
 
build it quiet, cheap, reliable, and functional.

It will serve you nicely. My server is a pentium pro 200 with an 80 gig HD, 3 nics, a cdrom, 4mb video. Its my BSD box. Runs perfectly
 
QUIET is important, to me anyways, my main rig sounds like a jet engine, so with my server I wanted it as quiet as possible

basically find whatever part you have lying around, putt hem together, and your good to go :D

I am running a celeron 400, with 384MB Ram, 8Gig hd :weaksauce:, I use ti to host my website and learn play with linux :eek:
 
My file server is basically a P3 450 with some drives in it and I have them shared. All the machine does is run the hard drives.
