Ok, I'm working on a eval of Server 2003, I need a kickass name for this computer...

It's a server so it needs to have a powerful name.

So far I've come up with Kingpin, but quickly that went out the window......

I call one of my workstations CRAYSUPERCOMP and another one SUPERCOMPUTER. hehe. Maybe one of those will work for you.

I tend to use Greek names for my setups.

Deucalion for my dedicated server.
The Muses for the individual computers: Calliope, Erato and Euterpe in service; Melpomene will be the HTPC I'm working on right now. My next computer will replace Calliope, called Thalia

That's just me, though. It makes my setup sound more impressive than it really is. :D

The computer is basically a starting point right now to show my boss that he doesn't know enough about linux as a PDC as he should, and I'm going to pretty much open his eyes with this. So it's not a pr0n box or anything, it'll be our FTP, E-mail, WSUS, PDC and perhaps some web pages and some other crap, whatever I can make it handle.

We currently have the greek mythology naming convention, and out current PDC is zeus. I'm trying to go with another convention for my test network.

Start your *nix puters as Norse gods and the like, then. Odin, Thor, Loki, Fenris, etc.

Heheh, I'll attempt that :) He's very partial to his *nix "babies".... That's really the main reason I'm doing this, and I may be able to get a new comp out of it.....

how about:
haxx0rhome
youcantypemynameitstoolong
a_root
money
major_bling_bling
ONE

may seem cheesy, but all my pcs are named after the cpu core:

Clawhammer-m
Venice
Palomino (htpc)
thunderbird (my 2003 server)
Barton (gf's pc)

I wish my server was clawhammer, though ;)

My favorite. :D

Artemis and Athena here. Apollo's been retired, and Ares has been moved out.

"...they would bring forth a demon capable of dethroning Zeus. This demon was Typhoon."

Echelon, Ghost, Wulfen, Rhiannon, Spartan, Spitfire

Really no naming scheme whatsoever, I'd like to find one that makes sense, but I also don't want to fall into the traditional naming schemes of Greek/Roman mythology, planets, etc.

I was considering WW2 airplanes for a while (hence Spitfire) or Celtic mythology, but never went through with either.

Lucifer, Gehenna, Lazarus, Messiah (if you're feeling religious)
The Creator, God, The Borg, Assimilator, BigDisck

I call my Domain Controller ( at work ) dc-1. The MSSQL server is called sql-1. The file server is called, you guessed it, filesrv-1.

Boring, yes, but there is little guess work involved when you have to bring an outsider into the network.

At work we use Planets, Greek gods, Norse Gods, TV/Movie characters,.... Too many different anming conventions for me... at home I use cartoon characters. Coyote, Roadrunner, Marvin, Daffy,.....

I do mine after moons for planets and chosen by their task/power, right now theres Atlas, Metis, and Callisto.

"Server"

The best name ever thought of for a server name. :p

whack whack server whack porn for t3h w1n! :D

i name em by who i got em from, or by the cpu core as well, but i like the cartoon naming convention, and i think ill have to steal it from ya ;)

ryan, shane, bart(for barton) then mom dad kelly, etc...my main server is named b0x tho cuz its the main b0x!

I ended up naming it kingpin because it turns out I wasn't the only spidey fan here.... he apparently is developing an interface between a SQL database and some application named "Dr. Octopus"....

that's what my server name is at home.

if I want music off my server, it's \\server\music or data it's \\server\data

works for me.

I name mine after women. Could I be any more of a loser.

Lucielle - First Mac
Barbara - PowerBook G3
Sylvia - Powerbook G4

Dina - Old workstation
Lindsey - New Workstation

Melissa - Old Server
Anahi - Old server

Edith - Old PocketPC
Julie - New PocketPC

I need a name for my new file server as well. Still thinking.

Edit: Came up with Leanne.

I hope his admin skills were better than his spelling!

haha, thats my spelling, dont put too much thought into spelling in online chatter

I've used various naming schemes at different places I've worked. I've also seen some fairly unique ones where I've had to use 3rd party servers.

From my alma mater, Mississippi State University's computer science department uses Disney character names (Walt, Tigger, Pooh, Piglet, et al). The Electrical and Computer Engineering department at MSU uses big name Sci-Fi character names (Hoth, Leto, Yavin, et al).

Personally, at home, I used to use major river names (Thames, Rubicon, Rhine, Mississippi, et al). My wife and I recently switched our naming scheme to manned spacecraft (Freedom, Discovery, Soyuz, et al).

just find some scheme that you think is not only *witty* (and thus easy to remember) but also are easy to convey and translate some level of the importance of each machine.

Well, since you're doing this for educational and theoretical purposes, why don't you actually use a conventional, practical name for your machines instead of a random cliché name.

Example of my home network, since I'm at home not in a building or department, I use my initials as an arbitrary filler

Wireless Router - EAB54G
Linux Server - EABDC01
Desktop - EABPC01
Notebook - EABLT01

Why do people give a crap about Greek or Roman mythological names or figures? Don't you people realize what the Greeks used to do for "fun"?
