server machine upgrade

since i had some spare parts laying around i thought i'd turn them into a small server machine. It's doing fine for most applications, though heavier stuff like is an issue.

I am willing to invest a bit of money into it but not too much, it'll only run a couple of things:
- minecraft server
- teamspeak
- cloud service
- nas service
- possibly some other stuff

It's mainly the minecraft server that puts a strain on the cpu, even more so when multiple players are mining/placing blocks (i know it sounds stupid but it really makes it lag).
I don't expect more than 5 or so players to be logged in at any given time so I don't really need a super high end server.

These are the specs as of now:
- Asus M4A78LT-M
- AMD Phenom II x2 550
- 8 gigs of ddr3

What i'm planning to upgrade is both the ram and the cpu, my question however is: is it worth it to upgrade on this motherboard?

Fit it with a phenom II x4 965 or should i throw it out and go all new with a bulldozer cpu?
Perhaps this board is capable of taking in bulldozer cpus?

Suggestions are welcome :)

ps: since the ram/cpu upgrade will be close to €200 on their own i think it's fair to add another 100 or so in case i'd upgrade the motherboard too.
 
We need to know the following:

- Where are you buying parts from?
- How is your current 8GB DDR3 kit set up? (e.g. 2x4, 4x2)
- What's the most that you're willing to spend on your upgrades? (Assuming you're replacing the motherboard as well as the processor and RAM, are you looking to keep things at or under €300?)

I couldn't find anything that would suggest that your Asus M4A78LT-M is capable of running Bulldozer CPUs.
 
- what do you mean "where"? from a webshop. There aren't any real hardware stores nearby and i live in Belgium. So I either buy stuff from 4launch.nl, azerty.nl, sometimes alternate. Depending on prices.

- current ram is set up as 4 sticks of 2 gig, looking for a 4x4 setup. ddr3 is mud cheap anyway.

- the maximum: about 300-ish. I don't mind going above that if there's a good reason for it. An absolute max would be 400 (that should be more than plenty for ram,cpu and mb from amd)

internet connection speed? It's certainly not lag, i'll tell you that. We're hooked into the fibernet, 60mb down, only 3mb up though (should still be sufficiant).
My pc will run an mc server just fine without anyone experiencing issues.

What's the specs of your PC so that we can get an idea of what kind of hardware a MC server will run just fine on.

Also to answer one of your earlier questions: That motherboard is not capable of supporting AMD Bulldozer CPUs at all. However I wouldn't bother with getting a new Bulldozer setup anyway if it requires you to get a new motherboard since you might as well go for a faster Intel setup at that point.
 
that's what i figured as well, i thought i'd ask just to be sure. You never know, right? perhaps we had some real hardcore dude around who managed to do some flashy stunts with the bios to make it accepts bulldozer cpus :p

My old system, which ran the server previously):
- core i7 920 (@3.5GHz)
- 12 gigs of ddr3 (it's the same kit that is now in the server, though only 8 gigs since it only supports dual channel ddr3)
- Asus p6t deluxe v2

The reason i'm asking if it would be worth to just put a phenom II x4 in there is because i read somewhere that this board was optimised to work with dual core athlons... Not the best cpus when it comes to performance.

Not sure where you read that but it sounds like bullshit to me. In any case, The Minecraft server software can apparently use multiple cores. So adding the Phenom II X4 955, 965, or 960T (whichever is cheaper) should help out.
 
as i thought, thanks for the help. the 965 is a very decent quad core capable of keeping up with my old i7 so i think i'm going to get one of those (they're quite cheap too).
