Server Build

The Coolermaster RC-690 is the far far better choice for a case.

Oh, unless you're fanatically loyal to Asus, you can save $20 and get a slightly faster CPU by going with this combo:
$280 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU + GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

The setup I went with is below. I just received the parts and just finished assembly tonight. Thanks for all the help with choosing the hardware.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Host OS
  • Windows Home Server Virtual OS
  • Coolermaster RC-690 Case
  • G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 RAM
  • OCZ Solid 2 SSD (Server 2008 R2 Drive)
  • Coolmaster Hyper 212 Plus Heatsink/Fan
  • ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Motherboard
  • AMD Phenom II X4 945 95W C3 Stepping Processor
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W PSU
  • Intel EXPI9301CTBLK Gigabit PCI-Express Secondary NIC
  • 4 x Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB HDs

I have not OCed the P2 945 (not really sure that it is necessary) but it is running at 24-25 degrees Celcius under 50% load. I have not pushed it to 100% load so I cannot say what the temp would be then, however, very happy with the current temps. And with 6 Yate Loons (Medium) this case is dead silent.

No pics?!?!?

Heh, you're either deaf, have bad hearing, or you're sitting far away from the case, because med. speed yate loons at stock speed are far from "dead silent." (or maybe your definition of dead silence is a bit off :p in dead silence, you can hear a pin drop ;))

I will post Pics when my SSD adapter is in (forgot to order it) so I don't have the guts hanging out the side.

If we are going to be literal about the audible level of the fans, then no, it is not dead silent. When the case is closed up, and it is under my desk, and I am working on the server, I have no audible feedback that the computer is running.

Now if I were to stick my head under the desk then yes, I could hear it. My point is, the case, even with 6 fans, is rather quiet.
