1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

mainly a secondary rig so I can play games with friends while they are at my house, all my machines fold 24-7 for the mig[H]ty 33, If I end up with AMD GPUs later it will mine as well.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

I can get a nice X58 barebones setup for $750 used, all I would need was drives, So lets see if we can beat $900 or so.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

US, Puget Sound, no Microcenter, yes Fry's

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

mobo, CPU, RAM, HSF, SSD, HDD, DVD

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Have an old Antec case here loaded with nice fans, have a Corsair AX750 I got on sale a while back, have a 9600GSO that was artifacting for my buddy that I baked...it will do for now, I can move the 6950s over later when I upgrade the main rig in my sig.

6) Will you be overclocking?

oh yeah

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

1080, 24"

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

next week

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? etc.

crossfire support

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

win7 64

I am open to all suggestions, I guess I am kind of thinking a 2500K setup or AM3+ if we can beat the performance of the used X58 for the same price, nice thing about that though is that it has a gulftown hex in it I could put in my main rig and put my 950 in it.

not sure, its really old, 2@80mm intakes and a single 120mm exhaust plus an 80mm on the door, 7 slots, 11"cards max

Well you should probably replace that case if you're serious about overclocking and crossfire. With that said, here's a build list:

that looks like the stuff, I kind of figured the 2500K was still the sweet spot

I have a good 750W PSU already, so maybe a different RAM kit

yeah, I know the case is suboptimal, but I will probably build in it for now and see how the cash flow goes

Thanks for the response, this forum is just amazing

When did you get the PSU?

Why not buy a decent $50 case (like the NXZT Source 210 Elite) and include the 120mm fan from your old case? 120mm fans cool better at the same speed and are quieter than 80mm fans.

couple months ago, was on sale at the egg plus MIR

Cause I have it all cleaned up and modded and loaded with Noctuas and it is taking up space empty here, plus $50 is $50...lol

Full tower or mid-tower?

Noctuas notwithstanding, can you mod the front (and/or side) so that you're using 120mm fans instead of 80s?

mid tower

yeah, I have some gentle typhoon 1850s here, I have considered cutting the front as you suggest.

The only reason why we are so keen on getting the details on that case you're reusing is because heat is dangerous to the components. Not only can the CPU/GPU overheat, granted they have features to prevent such a thing but it's not 100%, but even PSUs performance are effected by heat; thus it's possible the PSU could perform not as advertised and cause damage to your system.

Therefore, spending $50 for a good ventilated case is highly recommended.

Unless of course you intend on modding the case you are currently using with additional 120mm fans and/or more vents to vent hot air out of the system.

Thanks for your concern, I am capable of monitoring and managing the thermal situation as needed, I have run 95W chips in this case in the past and it wasn't too bad. Obviously if I get crazy with GPUs in the future that will be another matter. The way it is built there is the option to cut in a 140mm exhaust in the top as well. But enough about the case already.

I remain open to consider entirely new approaches if someone wants to throw one in.

Danny Bui's BOM looks solid to me, seeing that I do not need the PSU I might go for the 128GB M4 instead of the 64 GB and perhaps also be able to spend slightly more on the HSF for the same money.

I note that the RAM kit suggested bundled with the PSU I don't need is 1.65V, is this an issue with SB? Should I look for 1.5V RAM?

That RAM is rated at 1.5v, where do you see it's rated at 1.65v? If it is indeed rated at 1.65v, then you do not need it.

If you don't need/want the new PSU nor the case, then I'd suggest going with a 8GB kit of 2x4GB @ DDR3 1333. Shouldn't be more than about $45.

Go with the 128GB version of that SSD as you mentioned.

Up the hard drive to the 1TB version.

No need to replace the CPU cooler with a better one; that's the best your gonna get for it's price. That 2500k can reach 4.5Ghz+ on that cooler.

Right, my bad, too many windows open, I was getting it mixed up with the RAM in the used 1366 setup I was considering.

yeah, DDR3 seems crazy cheap right now

wow, OK, I was thinking about one of the 120mm closed loop setups, probably the Antec Kuhler, but I guess that is overkill.

I have a 212+ on my rig and it works great. I also built a computer for a buddy of mine with a 2500k, he rocks 4.5Ghz on it. His first computer he's ever built and the first time he's ever attempted overclocking.
