Seagate SATA Drive question.

I just picked up a Seagate 120GB SATA Drive from my local computer store for $105.

My question is, is that with my motherboard, Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev.2, it seems as though the only thing able to recognize the new drive is the raid controller. I don't have 2 of these drives so that's pointless. My Bios is completely updated. I'm wondering if I'm missing a setting within my bios, or if I need to use their Drive Wizard CD to be able to get Windows to install on the drive. Because when I tried, windows had a blue screen of death when I was at the menu to select which drive I wanted to format.

Please let me know ASAP as I'd like to get this thing either Formatting or installing windows by 5:30pm EST.

in bios you have to set the drives to single operation, not in raid mode.

Those sata seagates are crap though. I have one and it is louder and slower than my wd 80gb 8mb cache ide one! I can't wait to get rid of it and get a wd sata drive which is actually silent.

Don't listen to ANY of that. The Seagates are just about as fast and they are MUCH quieter than the WD drives. Source: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.html?i=2073 - Second of all, you don't need to set the drives to single operation. If you just hook them up, this is how they run! You set them for RAID specifically if that is what you want (which is not in this case).

Install Silicon Image SIL3112A RAID drivers. Yes, use the RAID drivers. You are not running RAID, but your controller is a SIL3112A RAID controller. I repeat: USE THE RAID DRIVERS. Let there be no confusion.
 
I was just dealing with this situation with the same drive - check my thread below "SATA and XP pissed at eachother" .

I could not get one drive working - but I suspect that I could have had I taken the correct steps (I ended up getting another drive for a RAID 0 array)

Enable the RAID controller - (and check out the mobo manual for any "obscure BIOS settings") and then install the drivers when Windows boots.

Finally - run diskmanagment to format the drive (right click on my computer and hit "MANAGE" / disk management is under "storage"). If all went well - you should see your unpartitioned drive. Follow the buttons to format and partition.

The functioning drive should then show up in My Computer.

I'd like to start a new thread, but not sure how to, but this may work fine here.
I have a a7n8x deluxe rev.2 and a SATA seagate 160 gb hard driver that i'm trying to get to work under winxp. I've only been able to install xp once thus far with 1 main probelm. I get a beeping sound form my HD. When it beeps, the hard drive spins up for a sec and then makes a faint click. This is the second. I returned the first one hoping it was a HD issue. Anywhoo, has anybody else had a similar problem with SATA Seagate HD? Also, can i update my sil3112a bios? Currently it's 4.2.47. My bios on my MB is 1008. About ready to pour my beer on it! Thanks :)
BTW, it also beeps at me before xp is istalled completely....
 
Err... hard drives should not be 'beeping' at all..? Older nForce2 BIOS revisions had a problem with SATA hard drives dying, but that was fxed back in like 1004 BIOS for your board... So I dunno... Could be a bad motherboard or a bad PSU or bad luck with your HDs...
 
Ha! Go figure. Wonder if it's a PSU issue? It's an Antec TruePower 430watt. I did try sliding my fsb down to 166 and it stopped the beeping for a little bit, untill i started to try to install windows. Also, the only time i was able to get XP up and running for a short period, I believe some of the files started to get corrupt :(...anywhoo, thanks for the reply..and let me know if you have anyother suggestions...oh, one other thing, when i did get xp loaded, it would normally beep when i was loading a web page a open a new window...sometimes, and after the beep, the computer would freeze for about a second. thanks again.
 
Yep, it's the PSU! I plugged in an old 250w and "Puff", the beeping went away. Thanks for the Help Dandragonrage!
