ok, so i built a mid-range/budget rig for my sister, and as she downloads lots of music i figured that a larger hd would be the way to go. sure, we all love the wd 74gig raptors, but at $180+ it just didn't seem cost effective for my sis.

so, i went with a seagate barracuda 7200.8 200gig hd after reading some positive reviews. unfortunately i now seem to be the rig building equivalent of the 98lb weakling who gets laughed at when he goes to the beach and reveals his concave chest and pasty complexion.

did i screw the pooch? i thought that most of the seagate burnout stories were myths or simply old holdovers from years gone by. anybody have personal experience with the new seagates and burnouts?

Seagate burnouts? Not sure what you mean. I've got a RAID-5 8x200GB all Seagate .7 and .8 drives. I replaced all the WD drives I used to use because those were failing at an alarming rate. In teh 8 months since I started the switchover I haven't lost a Seagate drive.
 
Has your drive actually gone bad or are you merely alarmed because of some story? In either case, all drive manufacturers have their lemons or rough patches... There has been more escalated issues in the past (<cough> old IBM Deathstars) but I don't think any manufacturer is currently suffering from a line-wide failure problem.

In the past 4 years I've had at 'least 1 drive die from just about every single manufacturer (including IBM [now Hitachi], Seagate, WD, Maxtor , and even Quantum). 'Least with Seagate you get a slightly longer warranty. Backups are your friend.
