SCREEN WENT BLACK

The screen on my laptop went black, but not completely black. You can faintly, and I mean faintly see some shapes of icons and thats it. I dont know what would be the best option. I dont have the money to buy a new laptop, and I dont have the money to get the screen repaired.

I am typing this from a linux machine and I was wondering if it were possible if i could get into my other pc through this machine through terminal server client, set up a second monitor, and use that? I know I can use a second monitor with the other laptop, but could I gain access to set it up with this linux machine?

It sounds like the backlight is dead. If this is the case you can repair it yourself.

If you can still see some of the icons can you try and hookup a second monitor to the laptop and just close your desktop to your second monitor. You should be able to find a replacement screen on ebay and depending on the model of your laptop is may be fairly cheap. All you'll need is a phillips screw driver and if you're lucky there will be a video of how to take the screen apart on youtube. Or at least some type of directions on the web. I guess a remote login should be possible, but that's if you already had the laptop setup to allow it. Otherwise it might be a little complicated.

Well what he probably meant was that you can buy a replacement screen from someone on ebay and do the replacement yourself. There's no way you could repair/rebuild the backlight yourself.

It depends entirely on the particular laptop. I have successfully replaced the backlight on two different laptops.;)

You can order the parts from the manufacturer of the laptop.
