My 9800 PRO seem to be dying on me after like 1 month. It runs fine in safe mode but whenever I install the video card drivers it just goes black.

First of all after watching a dvd movies I got some slight corruptions and hanged while browsing hardforums.

Then after restarting I got the message that windows couldn´t read my 9800 PRO drivers and that was probably the fault. And it definiatly looks like windows is right.

So I tried uninstall the video card drivers but it couldn´t initialize. So I run CATUNINSTALLER and get the same message yet it could obviously delete them anyway.

Then I try to reinstall the 4.3 ATI drivers. First time it hangs. So I uninstall them and reinstall them again. Now they install fine but the same problem persists.

I seem to be able to run 640x480 at 4 bit colour but anything higher my screen goes black.

Will try a clean reformat but do you think there is any hope for me :(

Damn a reinstallation didn´t help. Use Norton Ghost so it only takes about 4 minutes. Had it overwrite windows.

Still get the same message. Couldn´t finish a drawing command to your 9800 PRO. It´s probably your video card drivers that causes this.

Kind of hard to translate to English ;) Time for RMA I think. What do you think is the malfunction here?

Thats interesting. I just was about to write in about my 4600 doing the same thing. If I boot into safe mode it displays fine. It keeps resetting if I try to boot in to XP normal. Tried rolling it back and reinstalling the drivers. Says that the display drivers are probably the problem just like you said. Wonder if this is a hardware problem or if something recently installed is causing the problem?

For me it definiatly seem to be a hardware problem. Hadn´t installed anything lately that would explain this. Well the nVidia 4.3 IDE drivers. If they could cause corruption but since a clean reinstall didn´t help that was obviously not the problem.

I can´t see it being anything else than a hardware problem. Will try put in my 80 % dead 9700 PRO and see how that do.

This would be a bad time for my card to die. So close to the rollout of the new ones but do I really want to wait at least a month and a half to get a new one?

Yes but at least if you get an 9800 PRO for 200$ that will be a major upgrade. I had to replace my 9700 PRO for my 9800 PRO. I am just so happy I didn´t mod it or anything. Since I knew I would probably get a NV40 or R420 anyway.

And I do think if you are after bang for the buck a 9800 PRO for 200$ will be a bit better than a NV40 or R420 for 500$.

But the NV40 is supposed to be released in 15 april so you maybe don´t have to wait that long.

Me I will rma my card and then hold on to it as long as I can. At least until I see how the R420 and NV40 stacks to eachother.

Did the 9700 end up working?I didnt get a chance to try anything yesterday. Thought I would ask before I started to try things out.

Also if the new cards are good enough I will put out the money for em.

Yup it died after 1,5 year.

What monitor are you running? If it is a flat panel via DVI, do a quick test and try installing cat 3.7's and retest.

Switched out the 4600 for a geforce 1 :( .

It was the card. Looks like a month or so of catching up on my strategy games.

Retest?

My card does the same thing, multiple driver updates/formats/etc have never fixed it. Sometimes the 4.1 (IIRC) will work fine, othertimes they wont. Card is a sapphire 9600Pro. I just bought a 9800Pro, both for better speed (YAY) and to see if that fixes the issue.

oops- forgot to mention- 2000FP on DVI :D reduced DVI freq checked, alt DVI mode unchecked. If I dont run those 2 settings then my IE will show little sparks/white spots flashing on a black background when I am moving the mouse. Annoying.

Interesting you got a Sapphire too with this problem. I have a 21" Trinitron monitor so no DVI for me. But if it don´t work with the 4.3 or other drivers it ought to I see no reason to keep a damaged card when I got tons of warranty left.

Hehe...aren't you the same guy that was pimping how well his rig could run FarCry just the other day....

Here's a possible suggestion for your problem...check to see if the refresh rate/resolution is compatible with your monitor. Many monitors will go into standby when they are fed something they don't like.

Start with something easy like 1024x768 at 72hz.

No I wasn´t pimping was giving technical advice some people had issues with that and would rather see it as a cock measuring contest

How anyone can be envious about my rig is beyond me these guys have issues

And about the refresh rates it says 85 hertz as normal but will try lowering them if my 9700 PRO shows the same symptom.
