So today one of my good friend who works at a huge data center in North NJ asked me to
help him move around some servers.

When we get over into his cage they had these 4 racks or servers getting ready to
hit the garbage. I asked him to let me have them and he signed them out for me
and gave them to me.

What are these things worth?
Did I score anything of value?

They had already chucked over 8 of these!
He said these were the last 4 and the most expensive.
2 Dells 1 IBM and 1 Bigger Dell
No HD, I looked inside and they have Mem and Mother Boards.
2G ethernet switches in the back.

I dont know shit about this to be completly honest!





 
They are reasonably good from what I can see from the pictures. I think the Dells are 2950's - can't quite make it out from the picture. Just get the model numbers and google / ebay. You should see how many CPU's they have etc.
 
You should introduce us to this friend of yours. I live in North NJ. I'm looking to experiment with some stuff like that for fun.
 
Pictures of the exterior won't tell you much. Get the Service Tags from the backs of the Dells and plug them in at the Dell support site. It should tell you exactly what you've got.

They were probably old enough that they weren't worth the data center's time to do something about them like sell them. I'm not sure you'd make a killing on ebay but maybe you'd get a few bucks. But would have to factor time and expense finding proper packing materials and packing it all up.

You could mess around with them at home but if they're missing drives or other critical components then it won't be worth the expense to get drives that work (likely SAS and likely the controllers are old enough that they'll only accept Dell branded SAS drives). Not to mention enterprise servers are awkward for home use -- they're noisy and the older ones pull a lot of power.

If you want to try to sell these, then you'd need to inventory each one including the exact internals (memory, SAS controller, etc), weigh each one so you can estimate UPS Ground shipping cost, then research comparables on ebay, and if you dont find any you could just throw it up for a $1 auction, describing it all as best you can, take a lot of pictures of each so people see what they're getting, let it run for a week and see what happens, being sure to include weight and (estimated) box dimensions so theres no arguments about shipping cost if someone bids and wins - because it will be signifiicant (likely $70+ each plus cost of box & packing materials).

R905 is a pretty kick ass box and supports the 6-core Socket F chips. It's 1 generation old. 2 have sold recently on ebay for $800+

The 2950s have the dual core 5100 chips - they don't go for much on ebay.

They all support SATA or SAS drives. I've got a mix on one of mine.

These can make some hobbyist happy. I've personally used the icy dock 3.5 to 2.5 adapter cage to get a SATA SSD into a Dell with a Perc5 to squeeze a little more gusto from that generation of box. Yours look like they have the enterprise DRAC management card (furthest network port on the left in the rear) so you can do everything down to a bare metal OS install on them with the noisy server somewhere that it won't annoy you.
