scared while playin ?

Shalebridge Cradle (the thief 3 level) was not only scary as hell, but is one of the best ever levels ever designed in any game, ever.

This one's easy....

I live out in the country and was playing Half Life 1 years ago in my room with the lights out. There is a window directly to my left and the screen lit up the room and low and behold, there was a deer about 2 inches from the window looking in. Not just any deer, but a large buck. I think I honestly messed my pants. Why can't games be that terrifying? hehe.

I honestly have to say that playing Silent Hill 2, in the dark was nerve racking. I mean, i'm 100% serious.. even to this day it scares me. Walking along the hallway, and going in and out of rooms, until you hear static from your radio to warn you there's something in the area... and that terribly creepy music. Yipes!

hate to sound like a broken record but doom3 has got to be the only game that really scared me. I let myself get into it and parts of it made me stop playing for a day because of chest pains after all the scares.

Silent Hill 1 on psx was creepy..

Medal of honor (the original on psone) actually freaked me out with it's amazing sound, it got me pretty immersed and i got freaked out by gunshots and fear of dying.

LOL I was playing Ravenholm in the dark in my room , and my brother comes in with this loud ass pop gun fires it in my ear and I jumped like 2 feet in the hair then beat the crap out of him :D

Half Life 2 did not make me jump once. I don't know why Ravenholm is held so highly.

Doom 3 made me jump SO many times and scared the living shit out of me for a while.

and btw my computer randomly restarts whenever I do a shitty OC. :D

I remember playing Doom when I was 12 back on my first PC. I started fighting in the maze in level 2 and the pink puffy aliens came outa nowwhere and scared the living bejezus out of me. At the same time, our wall outlet was overheating so there was this strange fleshy smell in the air. I honestly could not walk down the hallway in the dark for weeks afterwards.

Ravenholm, by far was the worst. I swear to God, everytime I hear those zombie things crawling up those waterpipes the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I fucking hate those things.

FEAR by far scared the crap outa me the most, and that was just the demo. I havn't had the balls to do the full game.

Yeah those fast zombies really got to me. Especially the first time I saw them. The guy tosses me the shotgun and those zombies start flying between roofs in the distance and doing that sound. Made my hair stand on end. Then all the waterpipes started vibrating around me and I tried desperately to find a defensible position. Ugh. Hate those things. Something about that sound they make just freaks me out.

On the other hand, shooting flares into zombies in the dark in HL2:EP1 was damn fun! Wasn't scary at all. I mean, what's more fun than killing zombies slowly walking towards you by the light of their burning falling bretherin and the grenades that you rip from their hands and shoot back at them? My second time through EP1 in the part where you have to wait for the elevator to come I didn't even really have to shoot. The zombies just kept walking into fire and catching fire themselves, then dying, reinforcing the blaze. It was kinda funny actually :) Zombie bonfire! :D

Truly scared and not just "BOO/RAWR".. FEAR I must say freaked me out. When you hear a guy screaming "They all deserve to die", then you open a door and get teleported to a hallway with a girl standing upside down on a ceiling of blood with ghosts coming at you and dissolving after they swing at you... (runs away crying)

I swear I lost half of my ammo from my FPS reflexes shooting at that damn girl everytime she popped up.

Latest game is definitely Condemned. Usually I can hear the guys shuffling around to a corner to wait for me, but I didnt hear this one and when he turned to hit me I jumped so fast I fell out of my chair.

i remember playing a game called "Ladybug" for the atari i think (or coleco), but there was alaways a part that when you are in the level too long, the sound gets dark (dark sounding beeps, lol), and this demon or whatever comes into the level and chases you around.
It was scary back then, Im only 20, and i was 6 when i played it.

Undying did it for me, but there is always a point in a game when the scare factor goes away.

Hahaha, you guys make me feel less nerdy :p

I've jumped a few times playing oblivion when I'm in some dungeons or something similar and thinknig I'm alone and all of a sudden I turn at the perfect time to see a daedroth lunging at me with its mouth open.

But the best was also due to Oblivion, after playing it late at night for about 3-4 hours straight, I went to the restroom. I guess going from bright lights in the restroom to the dark of the hallway messed with my eyes, sort of like when you look at a light and then have a spot in your eye, out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw something move and for a brief moment (out of a wild imagination I guess) I thought it was one of the dremora characters running at me. Scared the HELL out of me, I kept looking over my shoulder as I was walking back down the hall. I'm 23 years old btw :p

Also, another thing that wasn't a "scare" but was funny, I used to play Tribes 2 RELIGIOUSLY (still play it at least every other day). I was in traffic once due to a car accident and was trying to see ahead, and I moved my thumb on the steering wheel to hit the "zoom" button :p

Condemned for sure. Nothing can touch that game's creepyness and atmosphere. The shopping mall level is crazy scary.
For other games (like Undying or RE4) there are a few scattered moments, but Condemned kept you scared of what's around each corner for the whole game. The only thing about it is that there were literally only 10-15 enemies on most levels, so you're scared of what MIGHT happen more than what's really there. That's admirable.
I've just recently upgraded my PC, so I'm hoping FEAR will have some of that.

The game that really does it for me is Silent Hill 2. To this day, I've only put on 30 minutes tops. It's that damn radio.

All I have to say is, playing FEAR at 2am, lights off, good headphones, slightly stoned. Scary as shit. God, between the scene where the girl runs by on all fours and the scene where you see someone run past a glass wall and disappear.. shit.

Got new Logitech Z5500s the other day and had them cranked playing Far Cry and it scared the crap outta me. It was all quiet and then somebody came up behind me - GET HIM!! and they started shooting at me. It was worse than FEAR.

oh my god, just a couple months ago i was up at 1:00AM playing fear and its complete dark with only the monitor lighting my cramped room, I'm near the last level about to escape the compound when i feel a cold nudge on my arm! now its pitch black and when i felt that i jumped up and screamed at the top of my lungs.....its was my damn dog! he wanted me to pet him so he nudged me arm  my parents came busting in my room and flipped out on me for waking them up.....PWNED

I was playing F.E.A.R. in my room with the only light on being my case's lights. I was in one of the first levels aand I was crawling through this dark airduct. While I was going on that evil little girl thing came running at me and, and at the same time my brother threw open my door. I jumped out of my chair, and didnt play FEAR for a while.

iv flipped out a couple of times in CS. its odd cuz i dont normally, but if say im awping someone, and their behind a box and im squinting to make sure i can see em, and then some dude comes up a ramp infront of me and fills the scope (cuz im on double zoom), yea. actually he didnt kill me, my buddie had that ramp covered, but the dude i was shootin at got away. (this was a cal-o preseason match)

but nothing like curtians falling on me, or getting soaked.

I once played this "Are you afraid of the dark" myst-like adventure game, where youre in a deserted theater house and all sorts of scary shit chases you and all you can do is run in hopes of finding the spot where you can hide. Like youre walking up the stairs and all a sudden this caveman pops onto your screen and youre like AHHHH. Also there was a lightning monster, a wax skeleton and other stuff. If they caught you, the evil magician would put you in a box and make you disappear. Oh god that game and show ruined my childhood

LOL now that is funny! NO Doggie treats for you for week!! lol I had a similar one only it was while playing Fear with headphones because I live in an apartment, so at night especially late, I have to use headphones and then my brother who stays with me comes up behind me places his hand on my shoulder to ask to have a cigarette, needless to say his ass does not ever touch me again while I'm sitting at my comp w/ headphones on! he just shouts my name out now. :)

Holy fucking shit, I think I know what game that is. I played it with my friend in like... 4th grade. My god. Is it the one where you are like with your friends going into a abandoned musical place? And you walk across the stage, and theres like an incinerator room and shit?

i still cant believe after how far we've evolved and how much we've overcome as a species, where still terrified of things like the dark which stems from our main fear of anything unknown

Sounds like some late-night philosiphizing.

gotta be fear.. that little girl.. =/
and noises... and whenever statics comes.. you know something is going down.. =/

Im actually afraid to play fear :p im 15 and tend to do alot of my gaming all night til early in the morning and I dont like playing games like fear cause i just dont want to be scared next time i have to walk down my hallway to the kitchen where there is like 5 windows and having to look in all of them to see if someone is out there or watching me

LOL, so many Doom 3's being mentioned. I admit i'm one of them too . My habit of playing games at night, alone in the dark, with my face up against the screen. Has made it impossible for me to move an inch in game without cursing at myself when the next monster pops out of no where, going ape sh!t and hitting everything BUT the monster, and having to replay the mission because i died :( .

Diablo 1 scared me a lot when I was a small kid. Particularly the butcher. Not sure how long it took me to beat the game after I encountered him. Probably another 2 years to attempt it again.

yeah, i remember almost shitting my pants when the skeleton comes out of the closet and you have to run all the way to the boiler room where it meltss

Here's a suggestion for any headphone users who might get startled or annoyed when someone gets your attention by touching. Ask the people you live with to get your attention by blinking the room light. It has worked for me in the past.

As for the fear from a game carrying over into real life... I was playing AVP2 single player marine, which is one of the scariest games going. It was completely dark and I was home alone, cranking the surround sound in the creepy basement of my unfamiliar new rental house. The game was freaking me out and I was already thinking about turning it off and firing up MAME for some relief from the tension.

Suddenly a huge spider scampered down off the top of the monitor onto the screen. For a moment, I froze, seized up in terror. The spider, bigger across than a Looney, skittered like a facehugger down off the screen, then bee-lined straight at me, under my keyboard, and disappeared into the darkness under my desk, right between my legs. I tossed the mouse from my right hand while jumping up and away from the desk, shrieking with terror. I gyrated and spasmed around the room, like MC Hammer in full parachute-pants mode for about thirty seconds to make sure the spider was not on me.

Needless to say I quit the game, turned on all the lights, and ended that motherf***ing spider's miserable existence!

I also have to admit doom 3 has got me, i'll be walking and all of a sudden somethen pops up outta nowhere bout shit my pants sometimes. Counterstrike gets me sometimes aswell mostly from running around and having a nade tossed near me or being shot.

Modern Era, Doom3 and the latest Resident Evil on Gamecube.

Prehistoric Times: Waaaaaay back, LucasArts made a game called Rescue on Fractulus, the instruction booklet was very vague and had a short storyline at the end of it. Premise is you are flying through canyons, trying to pick up downed pilots while avoiding the walls, enemy ships and gun emplacements. So pretty much fly, shoot, land, turn off shields, wait for pilot to come running up to ship, hear the clang clang of him climbing into ship, take off. Well one time I see pilot running up, didnt pay attention to his different colored helmet, and right before you would normally hear him climbing up the metal stairs, this big giant green alien pops up in front of your windshield and starts pounding the hell out of it and cracks start to form and I freakin panicked and luckily hit my shields and fried him.

The storyline at the end of the manual (which I hadn't read) gives a slight hint about this, but 1st time ever scared by a game.

Oh slightly unrelated but I remember my brother and I watching the old horror movie with the crawling hand, and my bro is on the floor streched out with his hand propping up his head and our dog comes up and licks him on the ear from behind and he flew off the floor. PRICELESS!

AARGH!

Doom 3 just scare the living crap outa me, havnt beaten the game and probaly wont.

while FEAR just got under my skin a few times,

but Resident Evil (1 I think) scared the f**k out of me and my cousin when the two dogs jumped threw the window, and another time when the door slamed behind us, we jumped like 5 feet into the air, I'm surious!!!.

Dino Crisis just got confusing to be scared.

Holy cow, I had forgotten about that game. Used to play it on my Commodore 64 back back BACK in the day. That game was so simplistic, but my dad and I used to freak out when that alien started banging on the cockpit. :p

My most recent event would be just a couple of months ago. Was playing Doom III for the second time through after completing it sometime ago (needed to kill the time till prey came out). Can't remeber exactly where I was at in the game but it was about 2:00am and I have the 5.1speaker setting and I can hear the footsteps of whatever behind me. Next thing I know my wife grabs my shoulder and lets out a blood curdling screech  as a group of those spiders start crawling out of everywhere. So after she got done performing CPR on me:D she askes if I am coming to bed soon. Haven't played Doom III since as I never know when she will sneak up on my next
