ok i didnt want to search for an hour but here what i got....120gig pata WD HDD currently has os, games etc on it. Finally got my sata port to work on my A7N8Xe-deluxe... So im gonna add a 80 gig sata WD to it. Would it be best to have the games all installed on that and leave the os on the 120...or vice versa os and games on 80.
Im gonna use the 80 in 2 partitions already. Wanting to use it for my divx encoding etc. and have seperate part for games or whatever.
I know there prolly post on this somewhere...any opinoins greatly appreciated...
:D

The only drives that benefit from SATAs bandwidth are the Raptors right now. You won't see an increase in speed on an 80gb SATA drive. If anything, you will see slightly slower speeds due to the fact that the larger the drive, the higher than performance usually (I know there is a reason for this, but I can remember right now). Leave your games on the 120GB is my recommendation.

With the newer SATA drives they have larger 16MB buffers and some have NCQ. While you're right, the raw speed of the bus doesn't help much, but these two features will increase performance quite a bit.

But if it's an older SATA drive and it doesn't have a larger buffer or NCQ I would leave things be.

Mod for 20 minutes and I've already jacked up somebody's post. Sorry for tacking on to your post Kido. Clicked Edit/Delete instead of quote. I'll change it back. What I said, and meant to be in a reply insted of edit:

The increased density, which allows more data to be crammed into the faster physical outer zones of the disk is why a larger drive is faster than a smaller drive, all other things being equal. Also, the higher density drives have shorter seeks for a given amount of data.

nah its not one with the big buffer and all that....so ill just leave it be adn do my encodes and storage onit......thanks for the help yall

and doug...i know how you feel...when i start modding i get into this little world and i dont know how to explain it but...i love it...
:D

it'd be worth putting your swap file on the sata drive if you were to leave all your games on your os drive....

you are correct, you will most likely see a performance increase, since you will be able to use both spindles to recduce latencies and improve BW. If you have a swap file on both drives, windows will use the swapfile on the other drive -if possible- ot put swap data while it is reading from one drive.

good idea...i didnt think about that.....ill try that tonight and compare my benchmarks...see if any difference...thanks for the help
