I need a 4 (or more) port SATA III PCIe card that is known to be bulletproof, and will run under Windows 8/Server 2012 without issue.

I thought I found one in the Syba SD-PEX40054 but I'm reading of lots of issues with boot delays and time-outs with that card.

I'd like to keep the price under $50.

What exactly are you planning on doing with it? I'm going to guess you want SATA III ports on an older motherboard / CPU.

There are a lot of forum posts saying that this is a bad idea, and just use the SATA II ports or upgrade the motherboard.
 
It's for my Server 2012 Essentials box.

The MB is an ASUS P8H67-M Pro/CSM.

It has 4 Sata II ports and 2 Sata III ports. I need 4 more.

I could live with Sata II ports but I don't like to buy backwards when buying new.

I didn't miss the "Bullet-proof" Part. Cheap cards generally you lose performance or stability or both.

I've had some crap luck with lesser known brand cards like that, and I can't recommend any cards like that.
I've been buying Intel SASUC8I cards and I am using them in many servers without issues in IT mode.

For RAID6 I pretty much standardize on areca cards.

A lot of people like the IBM M1015 card off ebay as well.

Don't really need enterprise quality (it's a home server). I just need reliable.

That said, I like that Intel SASUC8I for $160, and it's 8 ports.

I think I'll save up another payday and go for that one.

Works really great for ZFS builds as well (I'm using one currently as such) with 10 hitachi 2TB, and 2 velociraptors for zil.

Cheap SATA3 with good performance for SSDs : not gonna happen.

Cheap SATA3 with good performance for hard drives : no problem.

The SASUC8I however is old, not SATA3, and I don't think it supports 3TB drives.
 
I installed an Asmedia 2x SATA III in my main desktiop for the SSD I installed about 6 weeks ago. It's an ASUS P6T and it only has SATA II on board, and it was holding the drive to under 300MB/Sec.

I installed the Asmedia (which was PCIe Lane sensitive - Had to use a 16x slot for full performance) and hit numbers closer to 400.

I think it was about $23 at Microcenter.

I have one of these, albeit an older version, and I had blue-screen issues with it in Server 2008 everytime I'd start crystal disk info. Kinda weird, but very repeatable. Also had some blue screens while trying to format drives. Kinda weird but once everything was setup and formatted worked okay . I wouldn't recomend it. They have a never version of a card like that, that isn't marvell, but LSI which is supposed to be good.

And that's all fine and dandy but top speed is seldom used and for very short periods of time.

The bargain cards usually increase access time and decrease the all important 4K and 4K-64Thrd speeds which is used most of the time.

Top speeds are pretty and impressive but how often do you transfer large amounts of data from an SSD to another SSD?
