Sata 2 ??!?!?!

SATA II hard drives won't work on a mobo unless the mobo supports SATA II.

I think you mean SATA II hard drives won't work in "SATA II mode" unless the mobo supports SATA II.

But, they're right. 3Gb/s drives will only operate at 3Gb/s when plugged into a controller that supports 3Gb/s. Which most motherboards don't. If a 3Gb/s drive is plugged into a 1.5Gb/s controller, it will operate at 1.5Gb/s. So yes, the drive will work. No, it will not be running at 3Gb/s.
 
Which won't matter because very few drives in exsistence come close to 1.5gbs speeds let alone 3.0 gbps speeds. You will not notice the difference.
