So I was thinking of going all out and getting an HP 15K RPM 72 GB SAS hard drive (375870-B21). Anyone know anything about this one?

I need an HBA though to get it to hook up as a SATA right? is there a cheaper alternative because the HBAs that I have found are like $250 and thats half the price of the hard drive!
 
The alternatives would be to use SCSI 15K drives and a decent 320 controller. I have seen the 76 GB 15K Seagates on overcost.com for like $60 each (refurbed). I was almost tempted to go that way but my new system doesnt have as many PCI slots as I need to use everything I have and adding a SCSI controller.
 
What kind of performance hit do I get by running an adapter like that? Would it be smarter to get a controller for PCI express than PCI? I have a SCSI PCI controller in my current rig and i could just use that.
 
The only compatibility between SAS and SATA is the connectors are some what compatible. You can plug a SATA drive into a SAS connector but the other way around. Also SAS use different signalling and a different setup for the sommands which are still scsi just like SATA is still ata.

As for the HP drive it is most likely a Seagate, Fujitsu or Maxtor because HP doesn't make drives. I am not currently aware of any adaptors that would allow the use of a SAS drive in a SATA and I doubt there will be. As far as performance the differene between current generation SCSI drives is zero because all they are is scsi drives with a different controller setup.


Tjhe nice adavantage is the pretty much all HBA's support SATA drives too which makes setting up a system a little easier.

A pci express controller would be a better option because it gves you much more bandwidth because I doubt your current system has a 133mhz PCI-X slots which have roughly the same bandwidth as 4x PCI-E.
 
Ya I didn't think HP made hard drives, but one of my friends works for HP and I thought he could get me a discount. Thats the only reason i went for HP.

According to HP this HBA will allow me; 347786-B21.

I just found an article which shows the 10K raptor pretty much on par with a 15K SCSI, with the exception of XP boots. http://www.pugetsystems.com/articles.php?id=19

So for me SCSI is deffinately not worth it.
 
Raptor is definitely not on par with SCSI in most applications. Those benchmarks with Raptor vs SCSI use 10KRPM SCSI and not Fujitsu drives. I mean, come on. It's just wishful thinking that some 10KRPM drive is going to be faster than drives several times the price with 50% more RPM.

Those benchmarks are a little skewed. The 15k drive they use is a quite old Seagate first gen 15k rpm drive. Seagate is currently on the their 4 generation.

The raptor has the perfromance very close to previous generation 10k drives.
 
SATA drives will work on SAS HBAs, (and obviously SAS drives work on SAS HBAs) however SAS drives will not work on SATA HBAs.

Clicky SR comparison of 15K drives available in SAS to the WD740GD. I'd be willing to bet that that SAS drive is a Seagate (especially if it's in the $500 rnage like your posts suggest), in which case don't even bother. Even with the buffer and firmware on Cheetah 15K.4 toggled to "desktop" mode, the 15K.4 goes down in defeat to the WD740GD in 3/5 of SR's single user tests. In addition, any 15K drive will generate much more noise and heat than the WD740GD, cost a lot more for the same capacity, and require an additional HBA and driver.
